Kani recognised internationally

Kani holds a Tony Award. Wait for it, this award is handed out in America for outstanding work in theatre production on Broadway. Not many people can say that they are recognised internationally.

In the film Black Panther, John Kani and his son (Atandwa Kani) convinced film director Ryan Coogler to adopt isiXhosa and make it an official language of Wakanda.

John Kani plays Othello

“I kiss'd thee ere I kill'd thee: no way but this; Killing myself, to die upon a kiss.”

Kani became the first black person to play Othello in 1987. He played alongside Joanna Weinberg who played the character of Desdemona.
