โWe still tend, even though now that heโs in his early 80s, to look to Arch Desmond for responses to incidents around the country and expect that he will be the spokesperson.
Heโs done his bit.
And I think that one day I would like to see him just enjoying โ and of course itโs contrary to his own person โ enjoying retirement.
Heโs often teasing and saying that God doesnโt let you retire. And I think he would like to see that others take up the baton and others carry the torch and that we inspire others also to feel that we all have the responsibility for the good of our country. And ย I am sure thatโฆ our present government for example to have voices who are prepared to put their head on the block as he did in order to say this is not what God wants. To be able to say from the Churchโs point of view: โThus says the Lordโ, that this is heeding for corruption and abuse of power. And people of integrity I see siting in that parliament and wonder, when are they going to have the courage of their convictions to say this is wrong, this is the abuse of power, and we should see a transformation from the president down in our parliament.
For people of integrity to arise in our country who can speak in the same prophetic was as Desmond Tutu and say, โThus saith the Lord, this is not of God.โโ

The Archbishp was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He was honoured โnot only as a gesture of support to him and to the South African Council of Churches of which he is leader but also to all individuals and groups in South Africa who, with their concern for human dignity, fraternity and democracy, incite the admiration of the worldโ.
โThere is nobody who has a legacy like that of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. He became the voice of the people, he was brave, he stood against the odds. He was able to take a risk in his life in a manner that many people wouldnโt do. He became actually a voice of the world. At the end of the day it went beyond just South Africa into the world. He left a legacy for us from which we can learn and I learnt a lot from him and what he did shaped a lot of what I myself did. And we must thank him for the way in which he served the people.โ

DID THE ARCH HAVE A GREAT INTEREST IN SPORTS?
โI know that he was a golf caddy who used to indulge in rather nefarious practices of teeing up his playerโs ball to give him โ what the rule-makers would have called โ an unfair advantage. So he was involved in golf.
He did play rugby. I think he was a winger and a scrum-half โ the Francois Hougaard of his day โ not quite the same size and possibly not the same ability. But he loved rugby; he loves rugby still. Heโs an enthusiastic supporter of Western Province. So you can see that in his dotage his mind is beginning to go a little bit. When you have a team like the Lions playing so well and he doesnโt support them. But hey, you knowโฆ Thereโs no answering for what old age can do to you.โ
