M-Net Edge, the channel that pushes boundaries with the edgiest entertainment on television, is coming out in a big way this week Friday at 21:00. That’s when M-Net Edge will bring fans the first episode of the much-awaited series Transparent

The ground-breaking dramedy which has been lauded for its gripping story lines, on-point acting, creativity, and insights into the challenges of a transgender individual, has already nabbed a series of statuettes, including two Golden Globes, five Emmy Awards and two Critics’ Choice Television Awards. It also made history by becoming the first show by Amazon Studios to win major awards and the first series from a streaming video service to cinch the coveted Golden Globe for Best Series.

Furthermore, Transparent has been praised for hiring many transgender people to work on the production and be involved in the writing of the series.

It tells the story of a quirky family who must deal with the aftermath of a spectacular admission: their patriarch, retired professor Mort Pfefferman, is in fact transgender and has decided to now live openly as a woman named Maura. Eldest daughter Sarah (Amy Landecker, Revenge), youngest child Ali (Gaby Hoffman, Girls), son Josh (Jay Duplass, Togetherness) and mother Shelly (Judith Light, Dallas) are already in difficult and confusing places in their own lives, so dealing with another issue doesn’t come easy.

Golden Globe winner Jeffery Tambor (Arrested Development, The Hangover) is best known for his comedic roles, but in Transparent, Tambor gives a poignant and touching portrayal of discovering one’s identity in a complicated world.

So, be sure not to miss the superb Transparent, starting on Friday 23 October at 21:00.

You can also enjoy a little twisted comedy in The Brink, starting Friday 30 October at 21:30. Funnyman Jack Black comes to the small screen alongside Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is The New Black) for a geo-political comedy that brings together a politician, a diplomat and a Navy fighter pilot who somehow become entangled in the affairs of a military coup.

Sci-fi fans should also make a note of the fast-paced thriller Helix, starting Monday 26 October at 19:00. The creator of Battlestar Galactica is behind this series, which focuses on a team of scientists who investigate a potentially deadly disease outbreak in the Artic, where the future of humankind is in grave danger.

Danger is the name of the game in the second season of Gotham, starting Thursday 29 October at 19:00. Detective Gordon’s moral compass wavers more than ever, now that Penguin reigns over Gotham City.
