The seventh instalment of Tyler Perry’s highly successful Madea comedy franchise is here – just in time for Christmas. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas is your #SundayNightMovie on 20 December.
Scandal ensues when Madea (Perry) accompanies her niece Eileen (Anna Maria Horsford) on a trip to a rural town. Eileen is paying a visit to her daughter Lacey (Tika Sumpter), who refuses to come home for Christmas. It turns out that Lacey is avoiding her mother because she has secretly married Connor (Chad Michael Murray), a white former college classmate.
Besides the Madea movies, Perry is a prolific actor, writer, director, producer – you name it, he does it. However, the nearly two metres tall Perry hasn’t always been the class clown.
He was born Emmitt Perry Jr. and as a teenager, suffered from depression as a result of his father’s abuse. It was in 1991, after seeing an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in which Winfrey talked about the therapeutic benefits of writing, that a young Perry put pen to paper. He wrote letters to himself, eventually adapting them into a play about domestic abuse. In 1998, the play was performed to sold-out audiences.
He soon became the owner of a successful theatre company which focuses specifically on African-Americans. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the first Madea movie, was his breakthrough film.
Perry’s mother was a lifelong churchgoer, and he is a Christian himself.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas is showing at 20:05 on Sunday 20 December on M-Net, and at 20:30 on M-Net Movie Premiere.
