Civil unrest can be unpredictable but making sure you and your loved ones are alert and safe can bring a sense of clarity and some calm. Here are a few basic safety tips and national emergency numbers.
- Listen to the news, follow developments on social media and communicate with your immediate community to ensure you’re aware of any protest action in your area.
- Avoid travelling to areas unnecessarily that have been affected by civil unrest.
- If you have to pass through affected areas, try and find alternative routes – even if it means having to drive a longer distance.
- Also ensure your vehicle is in good mechanical order and you’ve performed all the basic checks such as oil, water and tyre pressure before setting off on your journey.
- Tell loved ones where you’re going, the route you’ll be taking and when you expect to arrive at your destination.
- Use a route planning app (such as Google Maps or Waze) to help you avoid congested areas. While not a guarantee, the apps often pick up on areas that might be affected by roadblocks due to unrest.
- Avoid travelling with valuables such as jewellery and accessories unnecessarily and keep any devices such as phones, laptops and tablets out of sight.
- If possible, travel with someone such as a colleague, friend or family member so you’re not isolated during unrest.
- Have emergency numbers on hand in case you find yourself in a volatile situation and inform the appropriate individuals the moment you feel unsafe.
- Take note of your surroundings throughout your trip to make it easier to direct emergency services to your location should you get stuck.
- Pay attention to road signs and guidance from authorities – such as traffic officers – informing you to avoid certain areas. If you’re able to, move away from the unrest and find a safe place to wait it out.
- Lock your doors and close your windows and do not try and interact with the rioters.
- Should the situation worsen, rather try and get away from your vehicle – no car or valuables are worth your life.
