In response to various questions regarding the recent chemical warehouse fire in Cornubia, KZN, warehouse owner United Phosphorus Limited as well as the eThekwini Municipality and KZN Department of Economic, Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs provided written responses.

Residents of Durban have been stunned by the extended noxious fallout of a chemical warehouse set on fire by looters in last monthsโ€™ violence. The company that owns the warehouse, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL), responded to our questions pertaining to the fire at itsย Cornubiaย warehouse.ย

The eThekwini Municipality also issued a response in which it stated it was "concerned about the contamination of the Ohlange River and estuary" and that the municipality is working closely with the relevant authorities to "advise on the rehabilitation and remediation of the impacted environment". Pending the release of an environmental impact report, beaches in the area remain closed.ย
