Rappers on the silver screen

27 April 2021
Five rappers who’ve made film magic.

Our last poll question was “in 2015 rapper Common, and another artist won an Oscar for best original song for which film?”

Here is your answer; in 2015 rapper Common and Rnb artist John Legend won an Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ for the song Glory, the theme song for Selma.

The rapper who also features in the movie, went on to become the first rapper to win an Emmy, Grammy and Oscar award.

Here is a list of five rappers who have also traded their mics for the silver screen now and then.

Will Smith

Don’t tell us you’ve forgotten that Will Smith is a rapper! He’s given us hits such as Get jiggy with it, Switch and the hit soundtrack to Men in Black but some of his best work has been on our cinema screens.

Smith is also a two-time nominee in the 'Best Actor category for his critically acclaimed work in the films Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.

What is the Fast and Furious franchise without ‘Tej Parker', the crew's mechanic and technical expert portrayed by rapper Ludacris?

Apart from this role, he has also appeared in well-received films such as Hustle & Flow and Crash.

Tu Pac

The rapper, affectionately known as ‘Pac’ may have been the most versatile and hardest working rapper of his time.

Amongst hit albums such as All Eyez on Me and Me Against the World, he also gave us memorable films such as Poetic Justice and Juice.

Queen Latifah

Not only can Queen Latifah spit bars, but she’s also an amazing actress who often brings comic relief to the many roles she’s played.

Some of her most significant films are Set It Off, Bringing Down the House, The Secret Life of Bees, Stranger Than Fiction and the voice of ‘Ellie’ on the animation Ice Age.

Ice Cube

Last but far from least (our list is no way in order of importance) Ice Cube. When one mentions the rapper, they need to put some 'respek’ on his name!

Can you say Friday, Boyz In The Hood, Ride Along, Barbershop, 21 Jump Street, Straight Out of Compton, the list is endless.

Straight Out of Compton is the highest-grossing music biopic of all time worldwide and was also nominated for 'Best Original Screenplay' at the Academy Awards.

Success and longevity in Hollywood and the world of entertainment requires versatility, we’re excited to see how many more of our music stars will follow this route.
