The thrilling conclusion to the trilogy (the original one that is) blew fans away, and it would be sixteen years before the next episode was released.

Luckily for fans, the years in between were filled with comic books, novels and games to keep them immersed in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi will be aired on the following dates on the M-Net Movies Star Wars Pop Up Channel on DStv 109:

Wednesday 2 September, 06:00 and 19:30

Sunday 6 September, 12:55

Wednesday 9 September, 10:00 and 20:00

Sunday 13 September, 12:30

Year of release: 1983

Director: Richard Marquand

Production budget: $32.5 million

How much did it make at the box office worldwide: $572.7 million

Best quote: “When 900 years old, you reach… Look as good, you will not.”

Best good guy: Luke Skywalker

Best bad guy: Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious

Celebrity Fan: Benedict Cumberbatch

Rumours have been flying about whether or not Cumberbatch, who is a Star Wars’ fan, will be in The Force Awakens. Although confirmation has been given in the negative, there are two more sequels coming – so who knows what the future will hold. Cumberbatch did, however, get to visit the set of the seventh episode. The other Star Wars’ connection is that he appeared with Harrison Ford on The Graham Norton Show, leaving the Han Solo-actor gob-smacked at his spot-on impersonation of Chewbacca.

Did you know?

David Lynch turned down the chance to direct Return of the Jedi in order to work on Dune. David Cronenberg also declined an offer, choosing instead to work on Videodrome and The Dead Zone.

We love it for:

  • Jabba the Hutt
  • Ewoks and the forest moon of Endor
  • The Vader-Luke-Palpatine battle
