A tragic accident ltwenty-six years ago left the nerves in his left arm severly damaged. His dreams of making music and playing the piano were seemingly shattered as a result. But his mother resolved not to let his childhood dream fall by the wayside. While studying music in university he discovered another side of music- the production side. This became his new home and method of expression. He spent late nights learning how to program and these yielded success. He was selected to be a part of the Red Bull Music Academy- with direct access to talented music producers and facilities. This experience changed everything for Coffee.
A remix on a song by jazz muso Hugh Masekela opened the door for the birth of Black Coffee. The father, husband and businessman breathes music. ‘Africa Rising’ is his brainchild. The series of concerts, with a live orchestra, is bringing South African’s together and fostering pride in our diverse culture. For Black Coffee, the mission is #WeMustRise.
He is one of the few DJ’s who make their own music, making him a rare commodity and relevant to a wide audience. Platinum sales, international recognition and many awards later, Black Coffee remains focused on the goal of his music. It is more than just a cool beat, Coffee is creating music that will inspire people.
2016 promises to be an even bigger year for Black Coffee. He will be on music’s biggest stage- headling to a 200 000 strong crowd at Coachella with rock band Guns ‘n Roses. He is easily the most important producer in the country. But his long term goal is to be that internationally. As the saying goes ‘it’s not over till the fat lady sings.’ She is not done singing yet. And neither is Black Coffee. Create! Colloaborate! Celebrate!
