Our first Blind Auditions (Sunday 5 February) kicked off with our coaches proving their qualifications to be in those red chairs – it was an uplifting medley of hits that ended with all four on stage, singing in unison.
First talent up this season, 23-year old Bubbles from Durban was participating to honour her late father, and her rendition of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You" had all coaches bar Karen turning. Despite Kahn saying that she was memorable and unique, and Bobby trying to sell her his chair (!) she opted for #TeamLira.
Newlywed Luke Lovemore was up next – and he just happens to be best mates with season 1 winner Richard Stirton. Performing Seal’s “Crazy”, he had the two ladies turning almost immediately. After being urged to choose wisely by Lira, she nabbed her second talent of the night. “The rockers are going with Lira,” Kahn remarked.
Freddy, another Durban contender, stepped up next with his unique take on Vance Joy's "Riptide" – and we had our first four-turn of the season! Karen admired his “mojo” and all thought he was something new – a “voice that will jump out,” according to Kahn, who soon became his coach.
Martin van Staden and Kelly Massyn weren’t so lucky, garnering no turns, but they certainly exhibited chops – and in Kelly’s case she got a huge amount of advice and compassion from the coaches. Doing Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do", Aston Wylie caught the attention of Lira, who bagged her third talent of the night – to Kahn’s regret as he hadn’t turned.
18-year old Rick Jansen got a last-minute turn from Bobby, who scored his first talent of the season. Coincidentally, Rick is also a looker! Our second last talent of the night, Kirby Jo, was feisty and full of attitude – and despite a “wobble” she still impressed Kahn.
Our final talent of the night, Marissa Petzer, is from Stilfontein – and that’s because she’s going out with Almur Marais from season 1. But she is definitely her own, powerful entity, and blew all four coaches away with her Led Zeppelin cover. Perhaps not surprisingly, she went with #TeamKaren!
More Blind Auditions, next Sunday, same place…
