In Sunday's intense episode of My Kitchen Rules SA, the “meat guys” of the competition, OG and G from Cape Town, were eliminated after a vegetarian Sudden Death cook-off against Bloem Besties, and venison experts, Liz and Leanne. The two meat-loving pairs of the series were pitted against each other after a disastrous pasta challenge that had judges David Higgs and J’Something reprimanding all six of the remaining teams for cooking well below par for this level of the competition.
The tension in the kitchen was palpable from the get-go when the judges informed the contestants that they’d be cooking in a tag-team pasta challenge. The brief: to create a delicious pasta dish from scratch, with accompanying sauce. The twist: only one member of each team was allowed to cook at a time in 20 minute intervals, and after 40 minutes had elapsed, both cooks would be allowed to finish the dish together in the final 20 minute stretch. The winners of last week’s Street Food challenge, mother and daughter Lani and Louzel, had the advantage of choosing whether everyone would be creating filled pastas or cut pastas for this cook-off. They chose filled pastas, providing everyone with the opportunity to use a variety of exciting fillings.
Having never cooked individually before, and with time against them, the six teams of home cooks played it safe, with most of them creating a filled pasta with a burnt butter and sage sauce, much to the judges’ dismay. Brothers-in-law OG and G completely mismanaged their time, and didn’t even manage to plate their dish by the time the clock stopped. Liz and Leanne’s dish was unfortunately very bland. And so, the two biggest meat-loving teams in the series were singled out for a Sudden Death elimination cook-off. As if the pressure wasn’t enough, judges David Higgs and J’Something revealed that Liz, Leanne, OG and G would have to prepare a vegetarian meal in order to secure their place in the next round of the show.
“I’ve never made a meal without meat in my life,” a visibly nervous Liz admitted to them. Totally out of their comfort zones, both teams created traditional “meaty” meals, but with vegetarian substitutes. Liz and Leanne put forward a vegetarian burger with tempura vegetables and a mielie, while OG and G plated some cheese and chives risotto balls with a chipotle salsa. Although there was very little separating the quality of their vegetarian meals, the judges chose to send OG and G home, since their risotto balls lacked any flavour. The judges then took everyone to task, with Chef David Higgs reminding them of the grand prize. “Even though you are all home cooks, we expect the highest level of skill from you all. We’ve seen what you can do and there is R1 Million at stake here,” he scolded.
With another People’s Choice challenge around the corner and the finale almost within reach, the remaining five pairs cannot afford to rest on their laurels any longer.
