As you kick back and relax over the long weekend, M-Net has your enthralling viewing sorted. M-Net (DStv Channel 101) will premiere three documentaries that are as heart-breaking as they are inspiring: from the story of a boundary-breaking athlete in a wheelchair to a cricketer protecting his beloved dogs during the Russia-Ukraine war.
All three films are directed by Stefan Enslin, a celebrated novelist and filmmaker (Verskietende Ster),ย and produced by Killer Puppy Media.
Starting things off on Friday 16 December at 19:00 isย Against All Odds: The Alwyn Uys Story. It tells the tale of former rugby player Alwyn Uys, who had a life-changing accident in 2014 that left him paralysed from the waist down.ย But he was never going to sit still.ย In 2020, he became the first-ever paraplegic to swim from Robben Island to Eden on the Bay in the Western Cape.ย Against All Oddsย tells the story of how Alwyn overcame adversity and became an inspiration to many.ย
Uys says: โIโm extremely excited to share with the world this story of HOPE in a time when it is much needed! How such a tragic event can be used for good is something that still boggles my mind to this day. This life journey that Iโm privileged to share will put the fire back in people's hearts! And give them a new perspective on their own circumstances. May hope arise again in their hearts.โ
Saturday 17 December at 19:00 sees the premiere ofย Unstoppable: The Rebecca Nagel Story, about the first woman to complete a half-marathon trail event in a wheelchair, completely unassisted.ย
Before she broke boundaries, Nagel had a car accident that left her paraplegic. Losingย all joy, she discovered CrossFit in 2020 and just two years later, made it to the top three worldwide as a CrossFit athlete for the category in which she was competing.
About choosing to share her story inย Unstoppable, Nagel says: โThis documentary is so important to me because it just shows that people are capable of far more than they think. Itโs about pushing yourself to your limits and being comfortable with being uncomfortable.โ
Rounding off the tales of inspiring resilience isย War Dogs and I, premiering on Sundayย 18 December 2022 at 17:30. Itย is a heartwarming documentary about Kobus Olivier, nomad cricketer and Ukraine cricket CEO who did everything in his power to protect his four dogs during the war between Russia and Ukraine.ย
Putting his own life in danger for that of his beloved dog children,ย heย takes us on their incredible journey from when bombs started to explode and all the tribulations they had to endure toย getย toย safety.
Olivier says:ย โThis documentary will display how an unbreakable bond and love helped us to survive the war and make it to safety. It will show that not even war could break us apart and how we always found a way to stay together. Where there is love, miracles happen.ย I look forward to sharing my story with the viewers.โ
Itโs set to be a weekend of emotive and empowering viewing on M-Net (DStv Channel 101). Just be sure to keep a box of tissues nearby.ย
