Grab your leggings and your stonewashed denim โ€“ Idols SA is heading back to the Eighties this week with special guest star Jennifer Rush!
ย
Jennifer Rushโ€™s 1985 single โ€œThe Power of Loveโ€ was a massive hit in Australia, Ireland, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and of course here in South Africa;ย and in England it was the best-selling single by a female solo artist in the history of the British music industry, until Whitney Houston broke that record in 1992 with โ€œI Will Always Love Youโ€.
ย
This Sunday, 4 October, Ms. Rush will perform her international mega-hit in person on the Idols SA stage at the State Theatre in Pretoria with the Idols SA Season 11 Top 9, and she will also perform another one of her greatest hits, the 1984โ€™s โ€œRing of Iceโ€.
ย
The Top 9 Idols will all be working hard this week to perfect their own Eighties' hits but, alas, one of them will not get to perform, as once again one contestant will be sent home before the end of Sundayโ€™s show.
ย
Here are the Eighties songs that the contestants are rehearsing this week, in alphabetical order:
ย
Amanda Antony (22) from Port Elizabeth went with a local hit, the 1980 anthem โ€œParadise Roadโ€, by Joy.
ย
Dineo Moseki (21) from Vryburg picked the Bryan Adams ballad ย โ€œHeavenโ€, from his 1984 album โ€œRecklessโ€.
ย
22-year-old Elwira Standili from Worcester plans to show off her rocker side with Tina Turnerโ€™s 1985 hit โ€œWe Donโ€™t Need Another Heroโ€, from the movie โ€œMad Max Beyond Thunderdomeโ€.
ย
Karabo Mogane (24) from Nelspruit has chosen the classic 1985 hit โ€œLast Christmasโ€ from the pop duo Wham.
ย
16-year-old Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage hits a cheerful note with Bobby McFerrinโ€™s jaunty 1986 hit โ€œDonโ€™t Worry Be Happyโ€.
ย
Lungisa Xhamela (24) from Langa is bringing a fresh interpretation to one of Eighties icon Cindy Lauperโ€™s all-time greatest hits, 1983โ€™s โ€œTime After Timeโ€.
ย
Mmatema Moremi (23) from Limpopo is also sticking to โ€œLocal Is Lekkerโ€ with Brenda Fassieโ€™s 1986 classic, โ€œWeekend Specialโ€.

Rhema Varrie (21) from Alberton will bring back memories with Simply Redโ€™s Grammy-winning 1989 ballad, โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€.
ย
And Siphelele Ngcobo (24) from Inanda went for true eighties magic with some Lionel Richie: the Oscar-winning 1985 hit โ€œSay You, Say Meโ€, from the movie โ€œWhite Nightsโ€.

Voting for the Top 8 will open at the close of Sundayโ€™s show.
