It was another sad goodbye on the Idols SA Season 11 stage tonight as the Top 8 bid farewell to Elwira Standili (22) from Worcester, who gave up her studies to pursue a life in the limelight.ย ย
Elwira received the bad news towards the end of theย Top 8 Spectacular at the State Theatre in Pretoria, which at least afforded her the opportunity to perform the mega-hit โThe Power of Loveโ with Eighties' icon Jennifer Rush, who was the special Idols SA guest star,ย on the eve of her Southern African tour.
โThe Eightiesโ was the musical theme of the evening,ย and the contestants were mentored in their rehearsals this week by Ms. Rush.
Over 4.24 million votes were cast for the Top 9 this week and the first person called to the stage, who received enough votes to stay in the Top 8 was the baby of the competition, 16-year-old Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage, with Bobby McFerrinโs jaunty 1988 hit โDonโt Worry Be Happyโ.
โI think itโs terrific. Thatโs exactly what everybodyโs got to do to make this work tonight,โ said Gareth Cliff. โYou make me happy!โ said a broadly grinning Somizi Mhlongo, and Unathi Msengana told Loyiso that he fulfilled what an artistโs purpose is tonight. โIโm sure the entire country is happy, she laughed. โIโm sure the entire continent is happy.โ
โThe song was absolutely perfect for you,โ Randall Abrahams said approvingly. โThatโs not to say that you canโt make a mistake, but your performance was absolutely top level.
Fans can vote for Loyiso via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 09 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
For her Eighties moment 22-year-old Amanda Antony from Port Elizabeth kept it local with the South African classic โParadise Roadโ, by Joy.
โI never get tired of hearing that song,โ said Gareth. โIt wasnโt perfect, but Iโm very happy that you made it through here tonight, and that you were able to sing that song for us.โ Somizi said it was one of his favourite songs, and Amandaโs performance was okay. โI think you did a safe job,โ he said. But Unathi thought it was better than โsafeโ. โAmanda, youโre a really, really good singer,โ said Randall. โBut the competition isnโt only about singing, itโs about votes.โ He felt that Amanda could have given a bigger dramatic performance of the song.
Fans can vote for Amanda via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 03 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
The third Idol who made it through to the Top 8 was Lungisa Xhamela (24) from Langa in the Cape, who performed an รก capella version of Eighties' icon Cindy Lauperโs all-time greatest hits, 1983โs โTime After Timeโ.
โIโve never heard that song done in such a fresh way,โ said Gareth. ย He and Somizi had words of praise for the backup vocalists. โI think itโs the best version Iโve ever heard,โ he said. โLike stolen condensed milk in a tin ...โ. โSoos kondensmelk,โ Unathi agreed. But trust Randall to point out that if everybody loved the backup vocals so much, Lungisa didnโt do enough to capture the audience.
Fans can vote for Lungisa via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 07 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
Siphelele Ngcobo (24) from Inanda made it through to the Top 8, despite Musical Director RJโs concerns about his performance last week, and he brought some true Eighties' magic with Lionel Richieโs Oscar-winning 1985 hit โSay You, Say Meโ, from the movie โWhite Nightsโ.
Gareth thought it sounded dated and Somizi thought maybe Siphelele should have chosen a vernacular song. โNo more English!โ he ranted passionately. But Unathi disagreed vehemently. โI think we do you a disservice when we tell you not to try,โ she said.ย Randall pointed out that Eighties' ballads are big โ โwhen you have your momentย you have to go for it.โ
Fans can vote for Siphelele via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 04 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
21-year-old Rhema Varrie from Alberton performed Simply Redโs Grammy-winning 1989 ballad, โIf You Donโt Know Me By Nowโ.
Gareth praised Rhemaโs unique, individual sounds and Somizi was beside himself. โYou speak to the heart and into the soul!โ he raved until words failed him. โYou really are finding yourself and its beautiful,โ said Unathi. โYouโre cooler than ice, man.โ Randall thought it was the best song choice of the evening, butย noted that Rhema got some of the phrasing wrong at the beginning.
Fans can vote for Rhema via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 06 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
Dineo Moseki (21) from Vryburg tackled the Bryan Adams balladย โHeavenโ, from his 1984 album โRecklessโ, but with the 2002 DJ Sammy dance remix approach.
Gareth thought it was a beautiful, gentle, well-thought-through performance. Somizi said Dineo is a perfect all-rounder. โThat was a considerably considered performance,โ said Unathi. Randall said thatโs what he meant when he told Amanda earlier that she had to give a bigger performance. โThat was a performance,โ he said.
Fans can vote for Dineo via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 05 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
ย With only three contestants left in the hot seats, 24-year-old Karabo Mogane from Nelspruit was the next contestant to make it to the Top 8. His Eighties' moment was the 1985 hit โLast Christmasโ from the pop duo Wham.
โYou can probably sing anything but there was something disjointed with that,โ Gareth complained. โThere was something not right.โ Somizi thought it night have been nerves, or that fact that Karabo was so close to the end of the show. โYou were depressed, my love,โ he noted. Unathi was confused because โthis is a sad song!โ she protested. Randall agreed that he was happy Karabo did not try to emulate George Michaelโs iconic rendition. โYou were really, really good,โ he said.
Fans can vote for Karabo via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 02 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
ย After saying goodbye to Elwira, 23-year-old Mmatema Moremi from Limpopo survived to make it to the Top 8 andย closed theย show with Brenda Fassieโs 1986 classic, โWeekend Specialโ.
โIt was all perfect,โ said a happy Gareth, and Somizi loved that she wasnโt trying to be Brenda Fassie, but made the song her own. โYouโre so professional,โ said Unathi. โWell done.โย Randall commended her on being able to perform in any style.
Fans can vote for Mmatema via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 10 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.
