Happy Fluffernutter Day – My Kitchen Rules SA

News

Try these PB sandwich combos.
fluffernutter on bread with spoon full of marshmallow fluff

There’s nothing quite like a peanut butter sandwich…except perhaps for a peanut butter and jam sandwich. Of course, if you really want to level it up, you can have a fluffernutter. Popular in the United States, especially in New England, this sandwich is a combination of peanut butter and marshmallow creme. We’re not sure if that sounds amazing or awful, but we’re willing to give it a try, especially since 8 October is the all-important Fluffernutter Day.

That got us thinking, what other creative combinations can we try with peanut butter? We asked the #MKRSA teams to give us their suggestions, so take a look and start spreading.

Keep it classic 🥜
PB & J is a classic combo (Refilwe and Ma'sud love theirs with apricot jam), but PB and golden syrup (Azraa's fave, while Tim goes Canadian with a bit of maple) and PB and bananas are right up there in the classics department. Throw in the bacon with the bananas and you’ve got Nicole’s fave. Larcé loves a PB and banana sandwich made with salted butter, while Abraham wants just the PB but with a thick layer of real butter. Waven, Jabu, and Shaeem want their bread buttered on both slices, thank you very much. Mark also loves his bread double-buttered and insists on crunchy peanut butter and almost overripe bananas.

Go alternative 🍓
These classics are classically served on white bread. Martin likes it extra thick and fresh with just PB and butter, while Mbali loves hers with margarine and apricot jam – Shereez too, but with strawberry jam. Jess, however, who’s allergic to peanuts, spreads almond butter on honey rye toast. Maybe Detlev should try this because he usually has to have his PB sandwiches with a side of Allergex. You can also swap out the bananas for something fun and fresh likes blueberries, strawberries, or apples for some crunch. If you insist on making Eddie a PB sandwich he’ll have his with strawberry jam on buttered white bread, but really he’d rather have a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with a glass of Chenin.

Add texture 🍪
On the crunch note, crunchy peanut butter is a go-to for many (Larcé, Mark, Michelle, Tšepang), but you can always get the smooth variety (a yes for Abraham, Shaeem, and Ma'sud) and add your own crunch by including chips, cereal, or cookies. Just imagine jamming Froot Loops or Coco Pops in there!

Choose chocolate 🍫
While we’re mentioning chocolate…Kirsten loves a classic PB and golden syrup but will happily eat a fluffernutter or slap together a PB and Nutella sandwich if she finds a bottle in the pantry. Of course, any chocolate will do. Sprinkle some choc chips in there, crumble a Flake, crush a Crunchie, pound a Peppermint Crisp, add Smarties…the possibilities are endless.

Be salty 🧂
My Kitchen Rules SA is often about elevating a classic, which is just what Michelle loves doing when she makes a PB sandwich. She adds honey and then cracks over some coarse salt. Can you feel your tastebuds tingling?

Be spicy 🌶️
Another classic, but not for everyone, is the weird and wonderful peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Larcé, however, really steps up the weird and wonderful, swearing by the deliciousness of PB, cold meat, and chilli sauce or fresh green chillies. Well…we do love a bit of spice.

Grill it 🔥
Whatever you add to your PB, you can level up the whole experience by toasting or grilling the whole shebang as Mark, Tšepang, and Ma'sud love doing.

What creative combos do you love making with peanut butter?
