The Mzansi Youth Choir was established in 2003 with the aim of affording talented, underprivileged teenagers and young adults (14 - 24 years) the opportunity to perform locally and abroad. The choir consists of 45 choristers from Soweto and other areas in and around Johannesburg.
The choir’s repertoire is an exciting assortment of South African music which incorporates elements of traditional music, pop, and jazz.
The Mzansi Youth Choir is widely regarded as the best show choir in the country. Performance highlights include the One World Music Festival, M-Net’s Idols, Huisgenoot Skouspel, Starlight Classics, The Voice (all three seasons), The Presidential Inauguration, KKNK, The National Arts Festival, The South African Music Awards, as well as performances with the Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and Celtic Women.
During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the choir shared the stage with Columbian superstar Shakira and local band Freshlyground for the performance of the official World Cup song ‘Waka Waka’ at the Kick-Off Concert as well as the World Cup Final.
In April 2017, the choir performed at the International Youth Choir Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The Mzansi Youth Choir was the only choir from the African continent to be selected to perform at this prestigious global event.
Mzansi’s beautiful and youthful sound, exciting choreography, pulsating energy, buoyancy, vibrancy and devotion to South African music is an experience not to be missed.
Joining them in a performance with Coach LIRA is child prodigy Josh Bouwer, a Grade 4 student from Southdowns College who’s been garnering plenty of attention.
Meanwhile, the Red Room is taken over by GROOTfm 90.5’s Hendri Myburgh, who presents Die Groot Ontbyt – a show that’s also broadcast live on kykNET. An MTN Radio Award winner in 2014, he’s also an actor and singer and starred in the musical ‘As Jy Sing’ with former The Voice SA Coach Bobby van Jaarsveld, his sister Karlien, Bok van Blerk, Hanna Grobler and Katlego Maboe.
