This week's Sunday night movie, Boss Level takes us on an action-packed sci-fi adventure with Mel Gibson and Frank GrilloThe movie is about a retired soldier who is stuck in a time loop and has to escape his death over and over again. Over the years we have seen quite a few movies that have taken a stab at this fascinating concept of time loops and we're looking back at some of the best.

 

Groundhog Day

The most iconic time loop movie of all time is an absolute classic. Bill Murray shines as the ditzy weatherman Phil Connors who repeats the events of Groundhog Day over and over again with hilarious consequences. As Phil desperately tries to escape the curse of Groundhog Day, he finds love and learns great lessons.

Before I Fall

In this American teen drama, teenager Samantha is stuck in a time loop of her death day. She needs to learn the patterns of the time loop in order to stop a fatal car accident, but as we all know: time loop movies take time to stop looping.

In this 1993 film, businessman Barry Thomas (Jonathan Silverman) is stuck in a time loop and tries to save the life of his co-worker Helen, whom he saw die on the same day. As events of the same day repeat, the pair uncover a devious scheme run by their boss and have to stop it. Fun fact: both Groundhog Day and 12:01 came out the same year, but Groundhog Day saw more success. 

Palm Springs

This 2020 romcom starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti sees two youngsters stuck in a time loop after entering a magical cave on a beach that creates a vortex. Soon the events of the day get more complicated with strange happenings and crazy love triangles causing them to question themselves.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 

Tim Burton's magical fantasy focuses on a young boy, Jake (Asa Butterfly), who travels to the year 1943. Once there, he uncovers Miss Peregrine's home, where she lives with a group of special children in a perpetual loop of 3 September 1943 as an ostensible means of protecting them from the outside world. Jake devises a plan to help them escape and we're taken through one magnificent time-travelling adventure. 

Source Code

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a US Army pilot who awakens on a train in the body of an unknown man with no memory and has to stop an explosion! Soon he learns about a government conspiracy and the source code, a time machine that sets events to eight minutes before the explosion. With only eight minutes to spare every single time, he embarks on a tireless mission to save the passengers from their doom.

Happy Death Day

In this comedy slasher, a university student has to re-live her death in order to save herself from a masked killer on campus. As she re-lives the events each time, she starts to put the clues together as to who could be the actual killer. The movie is filled with glorious, gory humour and dare we say, it's to die for!
