Take a look at our top moments from the fist six Star Wars movies and see whether you agree.
Episode IV: A New Hope
The battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader is not only our first look at a lightsaber duel (if you’re watching the films in the order they were made) but also the first time these two characters have met since their epic battle on the molten planet Mustafar (if you watch them chronologically). This time, Obi-Wan sacrifices himself, becoming one with the force, which is pretty cool.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
After pushing Luke’s newfound abilities to the brink (and lopping off his right hand in the process), Darth Vader delivers one of the most misquoted lines in movie history and reveals the horrifying truth. Not only of Obi-Wan’s deception but of young Skywalker’s shocking lineage.
Darth Vader: “Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.”
Luke Skywalker: “He told me enough. He told me you killed him.”
Darth Vader: “No. I am your father.”
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
The final confrontation between Vader and Skywalker, father and son, is what the whole original trilogy was building up to from the very first moment. With the Emperor continually goading Luke into doing something rash, like killing his own father, it’s full of tension and darkness. Ultimately, the Emperor’s plan backfires as Darth Vader redeems himself by saving his son and dispatching of the electrifying Emperor down an awfully deep chasm.
Episode I: The Phantom Menace
It was an excuse to insert some amazing special effects into the first of the prequel movies…but who cares! Along with big stories and bold characters, we want big and bold action from Star Wars. The pod-racing scene in The Phantom Menace is one of the best “car chase” sequences you’re ever likely to see; while fleshing out young Anakin’s character by showcasing his skills, reflexes and piloting ability.
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
In a prequel even more jam-packed with action, the best scene was undoudetly in the battle arena on the planet Geonosis. Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padmé find themselves overwhelmed by a swarm of monsters and the Sith army. Just when all seems lost, scores of Jedi with lightsabers drawn join the melee and the battle is on.
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
It’s the longest lightsaber duel in all six movies and arguably the most intense. The climactic battle between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on the lava planet Mustafar finally explains the need for Darth Vader’s suit. Once the closest of friends, the Jedi Knight and newly anointed Sith Lord go at it hammer and tongs before Obi-Wan is finally forced to mutilate his friend and watch him burn alive.
