Take a bite.

“Hamburgers, the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast,” says Samuel L Jackson in a jovial tone, in the cult classic film Pulp Fiction, laced of course with sarcasm. For hamburgers are not exactly ideal morning fodder. But just because they’re usually dripping in grease or made with patties consisting of who knows what, doesn’t mean they can’t be nutritious when made with wholesome, healthy ingredients.

The eight season 4 teams who made it to the My Kitchen Rules SA Challenge Phase were tasked with exactly that…well, challenge when they headed to Victoria Bay. “You need to create a healthy, a nutritious, but most of all, delicious burger,” briefed judge David Higgs – which is just what the teams did. From ostrich and lamb to tikka chicken and veggie, the teams came to the burger party.

Watching David Higgs and J’Something savour those burgers put us in mind of a few movie characters who did the same. Let’s take a look.

Pulp Fiction
We’ll start where we started, with Samuel L Jackson. As Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, he gets his face all up in a Big Kahuna burger. In an earlier scene, he marvels at the French name for a quarter pounder with cheese and decries the Dutch idea of putting mayo on fries (don’t knock it till you try it Jules!). Another scene has Mia Wallace (played to perfection by Uma Thurman) order a bloody Durward Kirby burger and a Five Dollar Shake – the perfect combo!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Movies have had all kinds of weird and wonderful things falling from the sky. In Magnolia, it’s frogs. In Evil Dead, it’s blood. In Sharknado, it’s sharks. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, has a way more palatable scene as cheeseburgers hurtle out of the sky. In the words of weathergirl Sam Sparks, “You’ve never seen a shower meatier than this.”

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
When you’ve partied your heart out and dawn is approaching, it can mean only one thing: it’s burger time. No matter the time of morning, you’ll drive till you’ve found a place that’s open – of course, these days that’s pretty easy to do, no matter what the time. But Harold and Kumar have a far harder time of it as one trip turns into a trip of another kind: the burger-searching kind – made all the more hilarious as Neil Patrick Harris tags along as himself.

Better Off Dead
Since we’re talking trippy, John Cusack’s Lane has a funky Frankenstein-inspired fantasy in this ‘80s dark comedy. Starring a hamburger. As the hours drag by in Lane’s dreary job at Pig Burgers, he imagines a burger coming to life and jamming to Van Halen’s Everybody Wants Some. A surreal scene, it’s an exception on our list, since it probably won’t leave you salivating for a burger and fries anytime soon.

Ocean’s 11
This is a small scene but had to be added because if you’ve watched enough Brad Pitt movies enough times, you’ll have noticed that he eats in practically every movie he’s in. Think peanut butter in Meet Joe Black, blood and rats in Interview with the Vampire, wasabi peas in Bullet Train, French fries in Moneyball, and last but not least a hamburger in Ocean’s Eleven. Don’t believe it? Here are 15 minutes of Brad Pitt eating, chowing, chewing, sipping, and slurping every manner of food and drink. You’re welcome.
