This Sunday youโre going to be diving into a dark mysteryย with Where the Crawdads Sing. This chilling movie is based on the novel of the same name by Deliaย Owens. Theย story about the lead character Kya takes place in the woods ofย a fictional town called Barkley Cove. Letโs go behind the scenes of this amazing movie and find out how they brought the book to life on screen.ย
The movie celebrates the strength of women and this was channelledย byย a strong female team includingย Reese Witherspoon as co-producer, actressesย Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya and Michael Hyatt as Mabel, andย director Olivia Newman. ย
The crew opted to shoot mostly in the marshesย of Louisiana and the city of Houma as they thought it would perfectly bring to life the townโs setting from the book. The swamp and marsh perfectly captureย the scenes that one could imagine whileย reading the book. The love story between theย characters Kya and Tate mostly takes place on the water and this made for a great atmosphere.ย The crew, however, experienced intenseย heat and nasty mosquitoes during filmingย but all added to the natural feel of the movie.
The historic Stย Bernard Parish Courthouse in Chalmette, Louisiana was used for the exteriorย shots in whichย Kya standsย trial. This exteriorย shot of a historical landmark added to the look and feel of the town duringย the 1960sย as depicted in the book.
The costumeย choices carefully depictย life in the 1960s and what the characters were experiencing when wearing them. For example, the character Kya is said toย wearย hand-me-downs and in one scene she puts on a peach dress that is made from 1950s silhouette material. The costume teamย ensured that the colour and shades of theย clothing chosen depicted the era.ย
Co-producer Reese Witherspoon shared some behind-the-scenes photos
