This Sunday you’re going to be diving into a dark mystery with Where the Crawdads Sing. This chilling movie is based on the novel of the same name by Delia Owens. The story about the lead character Kya takes place in the woods of a fictional town called Barkley Cove. Let’s go behind the scenes of this amazing movie and find out how they brought the book to life on screen.

The movie celebrates the strength of women and this was channelled by a strong female team including Reese Witherspoon as co-producer, actresses Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya and Michael Hyatt as Mabel, and director Olivia Newman.

The crew opted to shoot mostly in the marshes of Louisiana and the city of Houma as they thought it would perfectly bring to life the town’s setting from the book. The swamp and marsh perfectly capture the scenes that one could imagine while reading the book. The love story between the characters Kya and Tate mostly takes place on the water and this made for a great atmosphere. The crew, however, experienced intense heat and nasty mosquitoes during filming but all added to the natural feel of the movie.

The historic St Bernard Parish Courthouse in Chalmette, Louisiana was used for the exterior shots in which Kya stands trial. This exterior shot of a historical landmark added to the look and feel of the town during the 1960s as depicted in the book.

The costume choices carefully depict life in the 1960s and what the characters were experiencing when wearing them. For example, the character Kya is said to wear hand-me-downs and in one scene she puts on a peach dress that is made from 1950s silhouette material. The costume team ensured that the colour and shades of the clothing chosen depicted the era.

Co-producer Reese Witherspoon shared some behind-the-scenes photos

Actress Daisy Edgar-Jones shared cool snippets from the shoots.
