School holidays are upon us and M-Net Movies Smile channel 105 is prepared! From 5 December until 10 January the Animania festival will be bringing heroes, ogres, princesses, fairies and animals of all sorts in animated movies all day, every day for the second year in a row. In anticipation of the festival, we’ve picked the best funny moments from five of the movies featured during Animania that will put a smile on young (and old) fans’ faces.

Big Hero 6

This heartwarming movie will have you grabbing tissues for moments both tender and tragic, but it's not all sobs and shakes. The movie has a healthy dose of humour too, and we can’t decide if we laughed more at Hiro teaching Baymax how to fist bump or Hiro trying to sneak Baymax past his mother.

Watch Big Hero 6 on 4 January at 12:43.

Despicable Me

We love the minions! They stole the show to such an extent they got their very own movie last year. But let’s not forget Gru or ignore the fact that he’s a memorable character in his own right. In the first film, his villainous temperament is perfectly illustrated when he makes a balloon toy for a little boy, only to literally burst his bubble by popping it in his face. It’s indisputably cruel, but undeniably funny and marks our top funny moment.

Watch Despicable Me on 11 December at 20:00 and Minions on 6 December at 18:00.

The Good Dinosaur

A treasure trove of giggly moments, they come courtesy of an anthropomorphic dinosaur and a young boy who’s more pet dog than little human. The cheeky moment when the two new friends, Arlo and Spot, eat some funky fruit and go on a bit of a bender is worth mentioning, but the one that’ll really have you laughing out loud is that awkward moment when Arlo inadvertently glimpses Spot answering the call of nature.

Watch The Good Dinosaur on 15 December at 13:20.

Madagascar

Hollywood’s top actors voice the main characters, but it’s the supporting cast of lemurs and penguins that give the movies their finest and funniest moments. The mouse lemur Mort, in particular, stands out. It’s his declaration of love of the new arrivals on the island in the first movie that will have you giggling and falling in exasperated love with the adorable critter.

Watch Madagascar on 21 December at 18:05 and Penguins of Madagascar on 10 December at 16:30.

Shrek

There are four Shrek movies (with a tentative fifth instalment) and too many funny moments to pick just one, so we decided to go with a character instead – none other than Donkey. Voiced by comedy great, Eddie Murphy, he stole the show in the first movie, until Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots came along in the first sequel and almost nudged Donkey into position No. 2. But from waffles in the morning and sweet-talking a dragon to giving Shrek romantic advice and being the worst travel companion ever, Donkey still comes out tops.

Watch Shrek on 5 December at 16:30, Shrek 2 on 6 December at 16:30 and Shrek the Third on 7 December at 16:25.
