Back in November of 2018, The Voice SA host teamed up with Domestos with the aim of building toilets for two schools in the Eastern Cape. Her goal was ambitious – she wanted to crowdfund R1.1 million.

A couple of weeks ago she revealed that she’d hit that mark and that construction had started!

She visited one of the schools – Thembalethu Primary School in Lusikisiki – with government officials and reps from Domestos earlier this month to break ground, posting, “Proper sanitation in our lifetime for all South African children folks!!!! It was so emotional, even shed a thug tear during my speech but here we are because of you.”

Anele’s team apparently received donations of R130,000 from businesses and consumers, but the bulk of the rest came in services and materials from a handful of key investors.

As anyone living in SA knows, adequate and safe sanitation is a huge issue in schools, and we commend Ms. Mdoda for her amazing philanthropy!

She’s not the only The Voice SA star using their celebrity for good – LIRA is performing for vulnerable children later this month.

The Voice SA airs on Sundays at 17:30. Join the conversation on our Facebook page, and on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #TheVoiceSA.
