Racing into cinemas. Turbo-charged entertainment. High-octane action. We could go on, but you get the point. And that point is that the eighth instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise (The Fate of the Furious) is finally (almost) here.

After preparing for this moment with the first seven feature films on the M-Net Movies Fast & Furious pop-up channel, we’re on our way tonight to watch The Fate of the Furious with the lucky winners of this month’s M-Net Movies Night Out.

But before you watch F8 (whether it’s tonight or once it’s released nationwide on 14 April) here are eight things you need to know about Fast & Furious 8.

  1. Director F. Gary Gray makes his Fast & Furious debut with F8. You’ve likely seen some of this previous films: Friday, The Italian Job, and Straight Outta Compton.
  2. South African actress Charlize Theron is the latest megastar to join the speedy canon, as the film’s main antagonist. She previously worked with director Gray in another car-related movie: The Italian Job.
  3. Another big name to keep an eye out for is Dame Helen Mirren, who honed her action chops in the Red movies.
  4. Game of Thrones’ fans can look forward to seeing Nathalie Emmanuel return as Ramsey, while wilding enthusiasts will recognise Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund Giantsbane in the fantasy series.
  5. And of course, you can expect the return of franchise regulars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Dwayne Johnson, as well as Luke Evans and Jason Statham.
  6. The film’s spectacular locations (which we’re sure will deliver spectacular action) are Cuba, Iceland, and New York City.
  7. Cars you’ll be salivating over include a 1929 Ford Rat Rod, a McLaren 675LT, a Twin Turbo Lamborghini, a Ferrari F430, a Rolls-Royce Wraith, and a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air.
  8. This won’t be the last Fast & Furious movie. F8 kicks off a new trilogy, which will end with F10 in 2021.
