Something strange has landed on Earth in your Sunday night movie, Arrival, and itโ€™s up to Amy Adams to figure out what. This critically acclaimed science fiction is a must-watch, but before you tune in here are a few fast facts about the film.

  1. Arrival is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is also behind the helm of Sicario and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049.
  2. The cast includes Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, who previously worked together on American Hustle.
  3. The movie is based on a short story by Ted Chiang, called Story of Your Life. However, Denis Villeneuve thought the title sounded too much like a rom-com so he had it changed.
  4. Itโ€™s not just J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin who create languages for their stories. Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created an alien language for the film.
  5. At this yearโ€™s Oscars the film received eight nominations, winning one for Best Achievement in Sound Editing.
  6. Amy Adamsโ€™ character, Louise Banks, is enlisted by the U.S. Army to translate communication with extraterrestrials. In real life, Adams was born on a U.S. military base in Italy.
  7. Jeremy Renner went straight from shooting Captain America: Civil War to shooting Arrival. Talk about a tight schedule!
  8. Most of the film was shot in Montreal, Canada.
