This morning we learnt that a Russian group of filmmakers plans on giving Leonardo DiCaprio a self-made "Yakut Oscar” regardless of whether or not he wins the real Oscar® this year. Although the sentiment is amusingly thoughtful for the so far five-times denied actor, we have a pretty good feeling about his chances at this year’s ceremony, as well as this Sunday’s BAFTAs.
Nominated for Leading Actor for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant, DiCaprio is joined in the category by four other outstanding actors. Quite frankly we’re glad we don’t have to make the decision, because we love all five of them.
The other categories are just as challenging, featuring a host of talented names both old, young and new. Speaking of new, we can’t wait to see who takes home the Rising Star Award. Will it be Star Wars’ John Boyega, Kingsman’s Taron Egerton, Black Mass’s Dakota Johnson, or Bel Powley from The Diary of a Teenage Girl?
Brie Larson is also up for the award, as well as being up for Lead Actress. If all things go her way on Sunday, the 26-year-old could be walking away with two BAFTAs in one night.
Having already garnered a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for her performance in Room, Larson’s chances are pretty high. Whoever wins, they'll join esteemed names like James McAvoy, Eva Green and Tom Hardy, who have all received the Rising Star Award.
The 2016 BAFTA Film Awards will take place in London on Sunday 14 February. Lovers of awards’ shows can tune in for a delayed broadcast on Monday 15 February at 05:00 on M-Net Movies Premiere.
