Carte Blanche

Three years ago, we investigated how the criminal justice system was allegedly being used to settle personal scores. It involved claims of intimidation and illegal detention.

This week, a name from that story emerged in an unexpected context: the Madlanga Commission investigating alleged corruption and political interference in the police and justice system. We were left wondering whether it was all just an astonishing coincidence, or if we’d unknowingly interviewed a man - Thami Ndlala - with far deeper police connections than we realised.

When we requested comment from Thami Ndlala, he contacted us and emphatically denied any connection between himself and allegations made at the Madlanga Commission, stressing that his name has not been mentioned at the Commission, and that there is no link between the allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission and our story aired in 2022.

He says he has no involvement with the police and holds no influence over police officials. He claims he has been unfairly targeted.

He also claims that the alleged party organiser mentioned by Witness A at the Commission is in fact a disgraced cop. Ndlala doesn't dispute that he's the owner of the hotel in question but states that he is not privy to discussions in meetings held there. He maintains, though, that the hotel has no record of any party that took place there and stands by the statement published by the hotel.
