The 77th edition of the world’s premiere television awards show, the Primetime Emmy Awards, comes to M-Net live at 02:00 on Monfay 15 September, celebrating the channel’s 130 nominations across its slate of shows. There’s also a recorded broadcast in prime time at 21:00 the same day, with the event also streamed on DStv Stream and available on DStv Catch Up for anytime viewing.
Presenters for the Emmys, hosted by Grammy® nominated comedian Nate Bargatze, are as follows: Elizabeth Banks, Ike Barinholtz, Angela Bassett, Jason Bateman, Kathy Bates, Kristen Bell, Alexis Bledel, Sterling K Brown, Stephen Colbert, Jennifer Coolidge, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane, Colman Domingo, Tina Fey, Walton Goggins, Tony Goldwyn, Lauren Graham, Kathryn Hahn, Mariska Hargitay, Justin Hartley, Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, James Marsden, Christopher Meloni, Leanne Morgan, Julianne Nicholson, Jenna Ortega, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Parker Posey, Jeff Probst, Phylicia Rashad, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Michael Schur, Sydney Sweeney, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Williams, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The awards, broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, have recognised excellence in television production since 1949, when six awards were handed out for shows broadcast exclusively on local Los Angeles networks. 77 years on, the event encompasses up to 30 categories, with separate awards events that also honour international content, daytime programming, and technical excellence.
The Emmy Awards are meaningful for actors and those behind the camera in that the awards are voted for by their peers in each category: actors vote for acting awards, directors vote for directing awards, and so on.
The 77th edition of the Awards is notable for its voter turnout – the largest in Primetime Emmys history – and its recognition of both its oldest (Kathy Bates) and youngest (Owen Cooper) ever drama category nominees. The Last of Us’s Bella Ramsey’s second Emmy nomination makes them the first openly non-binary performer to land more than one Emmy nomination, while, remarkably, Martin Scorsese and Harrison Ford received their first-ever Emmy nominations in their near-six-decade careers.
M-Net’s 130 nominations make the channel the third most-nominated network or streamer in the world, with that number dominated by Colin Farrell’s The Penguin with 24 nominations – including a first-ever performance nomination for Farrell, alongside his producing nomination. Season three of The White Lotus garnered 23 nominations, followed by fellow double-digit nominees The Last of Us (16); Hacks (14), and The Pitt (13).
Catch all the drama, fun, and glamour of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on M-Net (DStv Channel 101 and DStv Stream) live at 02:00 on Monday 15 September and recorded at 21:00 on the same day.
