It all started almost 20 years ago, when Dexter first hit our screens with Michael C Hall as the titular character. Since then, a slew of extra series have followed and with all the subtitles – from New Blood to Resurrection – we’re having a little trouble keeping them straight, so we put together a handy guide.

Dexter

This is the OG that started in 2006. It introduced us to Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C Hall, a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, who spends his spare time killing people. But his “victims” are carefully selected, because they’re murderers who did not get their just deserts, so Dexter was there to give it them. The show was wildly popular and successful, running for eight seasons, and reaping awards along the way. By the time the show ended in 2013, Hall had won a Golden Globe and received five acting Emmy nominations as well as one as producer for Outstanding Drama Series.

Dexter: New Blood

Eight years after the finale, Dexter returned for the first time. This spin-off, sequel, return (call it what you will), was subtitled New Blood and picked up ten years after the end of Dexter, with our titular antihero hiding in upstate New York. The show focused on Dexter and his son, who seemed set to take up the family business. However, this was only a limited series, and we had to say goodbye again after ten episodes.

Dexter: Original Sin

The Dexter withdrawal did not last long, because just a couple years later a prequel series was released. This time, we followed Dexter as an intern at the Miami Metro Police Department. Since this was something of an origin story for the character, Dexter was much younger and so played by a different actor, in the form of Patrick Gibson. It also featured starry names such as Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Michael C Hall was still involved, featuring as young Dexter’s inner voice. After initially being renewed, it was suddenly cancelled, much to the dismay of fans. Only time will tell if their petitioning leads to a second season.

Watch Dexter: Original Sin on Tuesdays at 21:00 on M-Net channel 101 or catch up on DStv Stream.

Dexter: Resurrection

With or without another season of Original Sin, we can find solace in another sequel series. Resurrection follows New Blood, picking up where the finale left off, with Dexter coming out of his coma and heading out to find his son. There are big names involved here too, as the show features Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Neil Patrick Harris, and Krysten Ritter. As yet, there is no confirmation about a second season, so we’ll have to wait and see whether Dexter will return in another season or perhaps another Dexter chapter with a new subtitle.

Dexter: Resurrection starts Tuesday 7 October at 21:00 on M-Net channel 101.
