Reeva Steenkamp is someone who is hard to forget. With the ongoing documentary, My Name is Reeva, we look back on her life.
- Steenkamp was born on 19 August 1983. That made her a Leo 🐱 and it seemed to tie in well with a career choice as a model. But her beauty matched her brains: she was also a paralegal.
- In 2013, the year of her death at the hands of her then boyfriend, Olympic winner Oscar Pistorius, also known as the Blade Runner, the Daily Maverick named her and Anene Booysen as persons of the year. Both lost their lives through gender based violence. “Let us remember a woman of deep empathy, who we know to have been moved and horrified by the death of Anene Booysen, just weeks before her own,” reads the website. “Let us remember Reeva, and Anene, and the countless other women whose deaths and rapes are considered so unexceptional that they warrant not even a single mention in a newspaper. Let us remember them as people, and not simply as the statistics we bear as a mark of national shame.”
- According to family members quoted in City Press, one Steenkamp’s favourite desserts was banana bread.
- “Reeva was an avid horse rider until she broke her back in a fall and had to learn to walk again in her early 20s,” reads the same article.
