The onset of the global Covid-19 pandemic is something that swept the world into a strange new territory. It has highlighted the need for mankind to act as one and in the interest of the whole.
Set up by the United Nations, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is the specialised arm of the organisation with a mandate of responsible public health. According to WHO’s constitution, their main objective is: “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health”.
“WHO works worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable,” reads its website.
WHO has been tirelessly keeping the public informed during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and unease.
For health emergencies, their responsibility includes:
- Prepare for emergencies by identifying, mitigating and managing risks.
- Prevent emergencies and support development of tools necessary during outbreaks.
- Detect and respond to acute health emergencies.
- Support delivery of essential health services in fragile settings.
