Western Cape learners have clinched the Nickelodeon Genius 2017 title.
Western Cape learners have clinched the Nickelodeon Genius 2017 title, thanks to their astounding maths and science skills that have earned them loads of prizes in a finale broadcast on NickToons (DStv Channel 308).
Three learners from Curro Durbanville Independent School in Cape Town – Joanie Thom, Ralph McDougall and Dantelle Joubert– have walked away with both the Genius title and R100 000 each, courtesy of Absa MegaU account.
Hosted by television personalities Lihle Msimang and Thapelo Hlophe, the exhilarating finale aired on Friday 7 July 2017 at 14:45 CAT. It saw the three win the educational battle against KwaZulu-Natal runners up Diya Lutchman from Reddam House in uMhlanga and Durban’s Danville Park Girls' High School learners Saiestha Govender and Ulrika Singh.
Tasania Parsadh, Channel Director Nickelodeon Africa Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa said, “We congratulate the Genius 2017 winners who have demonstrated that maths and science can be both entertaining and rewarding. These smart kids knew their stuff as they tested their mettle with physics, algebra, calculus and life science questions. We look forward to see what they achieve in the future!”
As part of their several prizes the winning pupils will also travel to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida in the USA where they will meet one of the programme’s astronauts, enjoy a simulated shuttle launch, participate in an astronaut training session and also visit Universal Studios in Orlando. Their school will also be awarded with educational materials and books worth R30 000, courtesy of Cambridge Publishing.
Willine Harvett, teacher from the Curro Durbanville Independent School said, “I am so proud to have been part of this wonderful adventure. The hours of preparation, little sleep and almost two weeks of competition battles paid off in the end. The learners and I look forward to our trip to the USA”.
Nickelodeon Genius 2017 is not only inspiring kids about science and mathematics but the show has also been recognised for its creative execution as they were bestowed with a Bronze for Best Logo Design at the Promax BDA Global Excellence Awards in Los Angeles onThursday 8 June 2017. This is the first international award for Nickelodeon and Viacom International Media Networks Africa as well as creative partner FairChild Creative who designed the logo with the Nickelodeon marketing team.
The show is powered by ABSA MegaU, and supported by the Government’s Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
