Fans who were planning to stream the Joburg Open live online and catch Louis Oosthuizen in action would have been disappointed to hear the news that he was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
Subsequently, they probably would have been amused to learn that the injury was caused by the golfer getting his hand caught between two airport trolleys when returning from a tournament in Mauritius.
Oosthuizen’s freak injury has left the field open for some other local favourites, and fans can stream the action live online with DStv Now from 10:00 on Friday 8 December.
Meanwhile, unlucky Louis can possibly console himself with the fact that he is hardly the first sportsman to miss out on a competition due to an absurd mishap.
Here are some others:
Santiago Canizares’ bottle brush
The Spanish goalkeeper missed the 2002 soccer World Cup after dropping a bottle of aftershave and severing a tendon in his foot.
Mark Boucher’s hand-cut slips
Although his career was subsequently ended by a far more serious injury, Mark Boucher suffered a serious loss of form during the Proteas’ 2001 tour to the West Indies. Boucher’s difficulties behind the stumps were reportedly due to scarring on his left hand from a cut he sustained while slicing a piece of biltong
Wayde van Niekerk’s heavy touch
The South African athletics star seemingly couldn’t put a foot wrong on the track in 2017. It was a different matter on the field, however, as he is due to miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games after tearing ligaments during an exhibition touch rugby match.
Roger Federer’s baby mistep
After going largely untroubled by injury for most of his career, Roger Federer missed a large part of the 2016 tennis season due to a knee injury he sustained while running a bath for his twin daughters.
