Check out our memorable sporting moments for 2016.
It seems like it was yesterday when SuperSport made a vow to keep you entertained throughout 2016. Our customers embarked on a journey with us as we brought them top-grade sporting action. We also made sure you never missed a second of your favourite sporting events via live video streaming on supersport.com, the SuperSport App and DStv Now (on Android and iOS).
The national cricket team gets plenty of slack failing to win a major tournament but they got into our good books in a major way in their recent test and One Day International series against Australia. The Proteas took a small step in regaining their number one ICC test ranking by dismantling the Aussies 2-1 Down Under and (in case you forgot) Faf du Plessis also led the Proteas to a 5-0 ODI series win in October.
You can catch the Proteas in action in the three-match test series live on SuperSport. The first test match gets underway on Monday 26 December at 10:00. PPC Newlands will host the second match (Monday 2 January at 10:00), and the series concludes at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on Thursday 12 January at 10:00. All of the action will be available via live video streaming on supersport.com, the SuperSport App and DStv Now on Android and iOS, with the highlights available on DStv Catch Up.
The 2016 Rio Olympics saw our athletes excel in ways we never imagined. Wayde van Niekerk engraved his name in the history books with a record-breaking performance in the 400m final. Not to be overshadowed, Caster Semenya effortlessly powered her way to a gold medal finish in the 800m women's final. Our Sevens Rugby team might not have taken the gold as we expected, but the Blitzboks brought home the bronze medal to add to South Africa’s eventual overall medal tally of 10. The fastest man on the planet, Usain Bolt also showed us why he is the greatest sprinter in the world by dominating in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m events in three consecutive Olympic Games.
Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton set the 2016 Formula 1 season on fire. It was a tug-of-war between the drivers who were at the peak of their powers. Rosberg won the championship and, much to our dismay, retired from the sport thereafter.
Football fans were left in awe as unlikely Premier League champions Leicester City reached the summit of English domestic footbal at the conclusion of the 2015/2016 season. Portugal were crowned 2016 Uefa European Championship winners after failing to win a single game in the group stages, proving once again that anything is possible in the unpredictable world of sport. Also, Mamelodi Sundowns represented the country with pride as the Brazilians won the Caf Champions League.
While the Springboks made the headlines for all the wrong reasons, the Lions shocked many as they finished as runners-up in the Super Rugby competition while in tennis, Andy Murray finally dethroned Novak Djokovic to claim the number one ranking at the ATP Singles Rankings.
