Rev your engines and join Tiff Needell for the premiere of Fifth Gear on HISTORY.

A brand new series is coming to the HISTORY channel from Thursday, 9 April at 20:05 CAT – make sure to set your PVR and tune in for the motoring show, Fifth Gear.

DStv spoke to Tiff Needell, former race car driver and one of the presenters of this exciting show, about what makes the show so successful, and he said “cars, cars, cars!”.

“Everyone loves cars. Kids love cars, and it’s a family show with something new and it’s always exciting,” said Needell.

Tiff is joined by motor journalists Vicki Butler-Henderson and Jonny Smith, as they test and review some of the world's best cars. And boy, is it an exciting list of cars that they get to play around with on this season of Fifth Gear.

“There’ll be Ferraris, Porches and Aston Martins. There’ll be weird and lovely cars, and new cars – and we try to cover from the beautiful South Africa to the freezing cold Sweden,” said Needell.

Needell has been a fan of race-car driving since the 1950s and 1960s, when he visited the Goodwood Race Track. And although he studied civil engineering, it was race-car driving that was his calling.

We simply had to ask the former Grand Prix driver what his stand is on who the better driver is: rally or Formula One drivers. Needell’s answer: Formula One drivers.

“There’s natural talent that’s there and it takes experience,” he said. And with the new season of Formula One in full swing, Needell said he will support Williams, as it’s a very British team, but he will also keep his eye on Sebastian Vettel.

“It’s a change of team, and it would be great to see how he does with Ferrari,” said Needell. (Vettel won the Malaysian Grand Prix, but who will come out tops at the Chinese Grand Prix? Find out when the third race of the season starts at 7:30 CAT on Sunday, 12 April, in HD, only on SuperSport 6.)

Even though Needell has been driving some of the best cars, and supercars, in the world, there’s one particular car that he wishes he could own.

“The McLaren F1, three-seater is still my dream car to own. It’s one of the most famous cars, and it’s so beautiful.”
