The SA hip hop scene is blowing up from your Cassper's to his protege's Nadia Nakia and Gemini Major and of course Kwesta.

Watch Original artists, producers, DJs and promoters like DJ Kool Herc, Coke La Rock, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Fab Five Freddy, The Sugarhill Gang and Russell Simmons in Hip Hop Evolution, a documentary about the history of hip-hop music, Sundays at 20:00 on BET, DStv Channel 129 which is also available on DStv Now.

Female rapper Rouge, made history by being the first hip hop artist to win a SAFTA. She won in the category Best Micro Budget Film for New Era Sessions a film which was released alongside her deut album and features Atandwa and Fikile Kani and Denise Zimba.  

 

 

SA  has it’s own hip hop legends like Skwatta Kamp who have recently released the track  There You Go in loving memory of fallen Skwatta Kamp member Flabba who died at the hands of his girlfriend Sindiswe Manqele.

Proverb is also a hip hop legend in his own right with his albums Book of Proverb and Fourthwrite amongst others.

Can we have a moment for the hip hop 90s groups like H2O and Teargas amongst others. That music gives us nostalgia every time.

K.O who broke off from the group introduced to the unforgettable Caracara and later that year in 2014 Cassper Nyovest gave us Doc Shebeleza which made us take note of him. He’s gone on to do great things like #fillupthedome and #fillupfnb.  He’s working towards #fillingupmosesmabhida

He’s also worked with the likes of Riky Rick, Kwesta on his Ngud and Major League.

Other hip hop peeps who are making waves include Okmalumkoolkat, Tshego, Yanga Chief, AKA and Fifi Cooper amongst others.

Sho Madjozi who has worked with Malumkoolkat on his hit Gqi raps in Xitsonga, also very artsy and visual and it’s apparent in her video for Dumi  Hi Phone. She also acts on Isithembiso, Monday – Thursday at 19:30 on Mzansi Magic.  Also available online on DStv Now.

Frank Casino made waves on DJ Speedsta’s Mayo single and has collaborated with Riky Rick on The Whole Thang and A$ap Ferg on Low.
