Who is Riaan Manser?

Manser’s most notable and prominent expedition to date is cycling the perimeter of Africa. His journey, Around Africa on My Bicycle, started in Cape Town, going through harsh terrain and beautiful areas around the continent to return to Cape Town. This journey was estimated to take a year but actually took two years - from 2003 to 2005 - to complete. From feeding hyenas to navigating the Sahara, Manser was able to take in the sights, culture and population of the African continent.

The hunger for adventure and exploration grew and Manser was soon on his next adventure in July 2009: circumnavigating around Madagascar in a kayak! From the country’s political turmoil to the increased physical and emotional demands of such a journey, Manser was in for quite a time! This journey took 11 months to complete all on his own with a single kayak as his method of transportation.

Manser’s next two journeys saw him venture forth with a partner. In March 2011, he embarked on a five-month trip with Dan Skinstad, Around Iceland on Inspiration, to circumnavigate Iceland. On 30 December 2013, Manser and his longtime girlfriend, Vasti Geldenhuys, embarked on an exciting trip to New York City - in an ocean rowing boat. No adventure is too vast for Manser it seems!

Giving back is something close to Manser’s heart - along with the adrenaline of adventure. No Food for Lazy Man is his initiative to help disadvantaged children get a sporting chance at a bright future. No Food for Lazy Man identifies schools that are in need then steps in to help children gain confidence, the spirit of teamwork and a chance to realise their dreams and potential.
