Wednesdays are the new black. So stay winning with new seasons of Orange is the New Black, The Americans and iZombie starting on DStv.
With two Emmy-winning dramas returning to M-Net and a future cult classic back on Vuzu AMP, and all three available to watch online with DStv Now, TV fans in need of a mid-week pick-me-up are spoilt for choice.
Get some food for thought with Orange is the New Black (Season 5 starts Wednesday 13 September at 22:00 on M-Net, available to watch on DStv Now)
If you’re feeling trapped in your midweek rut, spare a thought for the women locked up in Orange is the New Black. With focus constantly shifting among the inmates of Lichfield Penitentiary, the show boasts a cast of fully-inhabited, deeply human characters unrivalled by anything on TV.
And while it can utilize this deep roster to tell a variety of stories, from the comedic to the thrilling, it’s never better than when it’s plumbing the depths of the emotional toll the prison system takes on all involved, whether they’re locked up or tasked with keeping the keys.
Get your priorities right with The Americans (Season 5 starts Wednesday 13 September at 21:00 on M-Net, available to watch on DStv Now)
This show is a master of the slow burn. It’s also one of the best drama series to come out of what critics have taken to calling the “golden age” of TV (and the best that’s still on the air). Over the course of the last four seasons, Russian super-spies Phillip and Elizabeth have formed a bond that has hardened like a diamond under the inevitable forces of history, ideology and time.
In Season 5, they will face their biggest challenge yet as their families become even more enmeshed in their double lives they’ve tried to hide. Philip and Elizabeth have chosen family over country; watching them reckon with that choice has been one of TV’s most compelling experiences.
Take a break with iZombie (starts Wednesday 13 September at 21:00 on Vuzu AMP, available to watch on DStv Now)
What do you do if you’ve been solving problems all week and you’re waiting for that bolt of inspiration to strike? If you’re iZombie’s Liv Moore, the answer could simply be a snack-break away. The zombies on this show, including Liv, can tap into the memories and personalities of the people whose brains they consume!
While it may sound like an eye-rolling gimmick, over the last two seasons, the show has done a great job of deepening the zombie mythology while delivering some of the sharpest ensemble dialogue on TV. Plus, Rose McIver’s performance as zombie crime-fighter Liv is a subtle gem, walking the line between the new personality she takes on each week and her underlying character.
So take your pick of these critically-acclaimed series airing Wednesdays on M-Net and Vuzu AMP. Fortunately there's no need for FOMO once you've made your choice, since all three will also be available to watch online on DStv Catch Up, on your DStv Explora and on the DStv Now app.
