Watch online on BBC Brit, DStv Channel 120 as Louis Theroux spends time with lawmakers and women working in Houston's illegal sex industry.
Louis Theroux returns to BBC Brit with Trafficking Sex, one in a trilogy of challenging and important films which explore American cities facing uniquely devastating challenges. Set in Houston, the fourth largest city in the US and considered the number one hub in North America for human trafficking, Louis spends time with women working in the city’s illegal sex industry.
Watch online and streaming on DStv Now, Louis Theroux: Dark States: Trafficking Sex, Friday 1 December at 20:00 on BBC Brit (DStv Channel 120).
Follow Louis as he explores the complex dynamic between prostitute and pimp, and tries to understand what stops these women from breaking free. He discovers a subculture of rules which are morally challenging to most people. He also meets Vice Division officers tasked with persuading the working women to speak out against their pimps, and joins law enforcement on undercover operations.
Louis says: “I immerse myself in some of the most dysfunctional and disturbing aspects of American society. They combine hard-hitting actuality with intimate interviews. I have been granted access to the police in several states; I've got to know the people affected by crime; and I've also spent time with the perpetrators of crime, with the idea of understanding the causes of it, both on a systemic level and also in a very personal way.”
Louis also looks at how the criminal justice system is grappling with the conflict between helping women remove themselves from an exploitative lifestyle, while at the same time criminalizing them.
Also on BBC Brit, you can watch online and stream on DStv Now: Episodes – the fifth and final season, Tuesdays at 21:30.
