The cast of Riverdale.

It's time to get educated on the teen drama Riverdale.

Riverdale is the hit-series that’s got everyone talking. A cross between Twin Peaks meets Gossip Girl, it’s not hard to see why this teen drama has everyone hooked. Coming to Vuzu (116) on Tuesday 24 October at 21:00 and streaming live on DStv Now it’s time to join in on the fandom bandwagon.

Inspired by the globally known Archie Comics, Riverdale sees the darkness and intrigue of a small, sleepy town bubble to the surface. Expect to see familiar faces such as Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and Jughead Jones come to life in the series that will have you at the edge of your seat.

Without any spoilers, it’s time to share some interesting facts you may not know about the series before you dive into Riverdale.

 Set spotting

Take note of the aerial view of the town and various spots, does it look familiar? It should! If you were a fan of Pretty Little Liars, Witches of East End, The Carrie Diaries, Gilmore Girls or Hart of Dixie then you’d notice the same overhead of the town was shared in these series too. Hart of Dixie, Gilmore Girls, Pretty Little Liars and Riverdale all share the same set too. Does this mean we can expect Aria to be hanging out with Archie and the gang? Probably not.

South African roots

You read right and we can’t be any prouder of our South African roots weaving its way to Hollywood. Fiery red-head Cheryl Blossom is played by Madelaine Petsch. Petsch’s parents are South African so for the first ten years of her life it was divided between being in South Africa and Washington. The family eventually settled in the USA where she focused on her entertainment career.

Wait, there’s more. Cheryl’s mother, Penelope Blossom is played by Nathalie Boltt. Soapie fans may recognise her from Isidingo where she played Joey Ortlepp! From soapie stardom to international hit-series, it’s hard to not be proud of her achievements. Also, we low-key love the drama she brings forth as a Blossom.

Musical auditions

Even actors play their own version of musical chairs – with auditions. Petsch was brought in initially to audition for girl-next-door Betty, Cole Sprouse went up initially for Archie and KJ Apa actually was one of the last people to audition for Archie. Phew, that’s a lot. It couldn’t have been easy but the final casting is perfection.

Rumour mill

We love a good series-related story stirring in Hollywood – even if it is just a rumour. Word on the street is that Riverdale will see a spin-off series around the town of Greendale. Confused? This is the neighbouring hometown of Sabrina the Teenage Witch! We’ve seen a number of live-action and animated versions of her story but a rebooted version of her magical life with a dark twist is what we’re all yearning for. The title role is tipped off to be heading to Disney darling Dove Cameron (check out that time we hung out with her)– we approve!

Don’t miss Riverdale S1 starting on Tuesday 24 October at 21:00 on Vuzu and streaming live on DStv Now
