On 14 February 2018, Jacob Zuma resigned as the President of South Africa.

Jacob Zuma has officially resigned as president of South Africa after becoming president in May 2009. In his speech, Zuma stated that he believed he served the South African nation to the best of his abilities and shared his gratitude to be entrusted within the highest office of the country and that he will continue to serve the country.

The ANC will meet with Zuma to do a handover as part of the process that has been described as painful and a difficult decision to make. His resignation has seen the Rand climb against the Dollar – the highest since 2015.

Cyril Ramaphosa received sole nominations as president elect in a parliamentary address that occurred on Thursday 15 February after Jacob Zuma’s resignation announcement the evening prior. He was sworn in on Thursday and will address the nation as the new president of South Africa this evening.
