The recent Dynamo A-Z special ranked as the top series ever on the channel, attracting over 110 000 viewers and ranking Discovery Family as #1 international entertainment channel on DStv. Overall, Discovery Family has reached a record 6.2 million viewers every month since launch, resulting in a double-digit higher share YoY for all viewers.

“We believe that the success of Discovery Family is due to the variety of programming offered; combining fun prime-time entertainment shows with accessible documentary and pop-science series in a way that encourages viewers to be curious about the world around them,” said Dilek Doyran, VP & Country Manager for Africa and the Mediterranean, Discovery Networks CEEMEA.

During this open-view period, viewers can look out for interesting shows on Discovery Family such as Quarx (from Monday 8 May at 16:00), the brand new series which takes an original spin on science education for the YouTube generation; Running Wild (from Sunday 21 May at 20:10), the documentary special charting an extraordinary few months in the life of the Lewa Conservancy in Kenya as they prepare to host the annual Lewa Safaricom Marathon; and React to That (Fridays at 21:00), the laugh-out-loud series which sees kids, teens, elders and celebrities reacting to incredible web videos.

Discovery Channel is the #1 factual channel in South Africa for men, dedicated to creating the highest-quality content that informs, inspires and entertains across genres including turbo, adventure, tough jobs and topical documentaries. 2017 has seen Discovery Channel reach nearly 4 million viewers so far, helped by shows including Brent Owens: Extreme, Authentic & Unwrapped, which averaged 50 000 viewers for the double-bill premiere (becoming its most watched show for 15-34s since 2016), and the penultimate episode of Gold Rush which achieved 94 000 viewers – the most watched episode on the channel so far this year.

“Discovery Channel needs no introduction; our global flagship brand for high-quality factual entertainment, the channel has been satisfying the curiosity of audiences across Africa for over 20 years. We are thrilled that even more DStv subscribers will have access to both channels throughout May and June, and get the chance to sample the fantastic family-friendly content we have planned for the weeks ahead,” continued Dilek Doyran.

Discovery Channel highlights in May and June include the real-life treasure hunt series Cooper's Treasure (from Tuesday 23 May at 20:00), which sees adventurer Darrell Miklos embark on a personal quest to fulfil his friend, astronaut Gordon Cooper’s, legacy of uncovering the hidden wealth he documented from space; Hunted UK (from Monday 5 June at 20:00) follows a group of brave individuals as they attempt to go off grid and avoid detection in this 24-hour surveillance society; motor mastermind Richard Rawlings and mechanical prodigy Aaron Kaufmann search the far flung corners of Texas and surrounding states for forgotten and derelict classic cars to buy and restore in all-new Fast n’ Loud (from Friday 5 May at 21:00); and two complete strangers are tasked with surviving in one of the world’s most extreme weather environments with no food, no water and no clothes in Naked and Afraid (from Tuesday 30 May at 22:00).
