From the colourful wigs to sophisticated red carpet looks, we’ve watched Nicki Minaj evolve in the media with hits like Superbass, Moment 4 Life, The Night is Still Young, Anaconda and many more. By now we all know the American pop artist and rapper is heading to South Africa to perform three shows in her Pinkprint tour in Johannesburg (Ticketpro Dome, Thursday 17 March), Durban (Moses Mabhida Stadium, Sunday 20 March) and Cape Town (Grand Arena, GrandWest, Tuesday 22 March). Finally South African fans (Barbz) of Nicki Minaj can experience the spectacular the female rapper offers in her performances.
It was only fitting that I sit down and chat to the man behind bringing the rap superstar, David Airey – co-owner of Promotions Company, Airey Scott. From his company’s success to Nicki’s plans when in South Africa, David shared many exciting details you won’t want to miss out on.
Airey Scott’s success
Founded in 2009 with co-owner Stuart Scott, Durban-based promotions company Airey Scott’s first event was based around the Vodacom Durban July. The success of this event as well as many others that followed catapulted it into being one of the biggest and most successful promoter in the country with a number of great events to its name. From bringing the likes of 2Chainz, Jill Scott and Kendrick Lamar to South African shores, people are always waiting anxiously whenever Airey Scott schedules an announcement – after all, it never disappoints. Airey Scott looks to bring the most current and relevant artists David explained, taking Kendrick Lamar as an example, “Kendrick was again an extremely relevant artist at the time and we almost brought him before his time . When we brought him to South Africa he was on the lips of everybody.”
David went on to tell us how each day is different for him when working at a promotions company. From insuring the artists are happy with everything from ground transport, the hotels, stage, sound and lighting, co-ordination of their shows, dealing with local suppliers and other parts of the industry, things in this creative industry can be full of pressure. The main question, what drives David and his team? “The passion we have for this industry and music – particularly urban music – is what drives us,” and this can be seen in the hard work and premier quality delivered in their events.
The Pinkprint Tour
Being one of Nicki Minaj’s Barbz for a great many years, I know that we are all eagerly waiting for the female emcee’s arrival to the country. But how long did it take to confirm the South African tour? “Months and months of negotiations – especially with someone like Nicki who is such a huge artist globally. She’s an a-list artist and she’s in demand on a day-to-day basis. It was difficult to co-ordinate gaps in Nicki’s itinerary when she can come to South Africa,” David explained. We can understand, from her clothing line to working on a television series, things are always frantic in Nicki's life. David went on to explain how much the successful rapper has been wanting to come over, “One thing I can say is that Nicki Minaj cannot wait to come to South Africa and she’s wanted to come here for some time now.” We’ll be waiting to give her a true South African welcome!
Details of the opening acts for each of the concerts are yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed that there will definitely be local talent sharing the stage with the Queen of Rap. From Superbass to Anaconda, fans can expect to hear all their favourite Minaj songs during the performances. David shared that Nicki and her team are putting a lot of focus on the production: the dancers, the lighting, the sound, the visuals and the variety of costumes that she will be wearing on stage.
Seeing as this is Nicki Minaj’s first trip to South Africa, it has to be a memorable one. “We always place a strong focus on ensuring the artists we bring out here have the chance to experience South Africa. It’s important for them to see our country away from the hotel and stage,” said David, who reiterated the importance of showcasing the incredible country we live in. Nicki and her team are going to be experiencing the Big Five and game parks while they’re here David explained. They’ll be experiencing Table Mountain and Robben Island down in Cape Town. In Johannesburg, Nicki is very excited to get a feeling of the inner city of Jo’burg and some of the cultural landmarks. “We want Nicki and her team to leave here really experiencing our country,” David added.
Before ending our conversation, David shared with us his top Nicki Minaj songs, which include Superbass and Pills and Potions, and encouraged fans to go out and get their tickets before they get sold out before each concert date. Nicki Minaj's Pinkprint tour tickets can be purchased from www.ticketpro.co.za and selected Edgars retail stores, with prices ranging from R490. The Nicki Minaj Pinkprint tour is presented by Airey Scott Entertainment, 5FM, Metro FM, and Channel O.
