Watch UnREAL online on DStv Now
DStv had the opportunity to interview Constance Zimmer who plays Quinn on Lifetime's UnREAL.
Watch Unreal on Monday 9 April at 20:55 on Lifetime, DStv channel 131 , also available to stream on DStv Now. Don't miss season 3 premiering on Monday 16 April at 20:00.
UnReal is set against the backdrop of the hit dating competition show Everlasting, UnREAL gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a reality show.
It centers around flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a young producer whose sole job it is to manipulate the reality dating show contestants to get the outrageous footage and ‘good tv’ that the program's dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King (Emmy nominee Constance Zimmer), demands. What ensues is an eye-opening look at what happens in the outrageous world of unscripted television where being a contestant can be vicious and producing it is a whole other reality.
We asked Constance why is this show so wickedly addictive?
She believes it’s like being the fly on the wall, “when we think we’re seeing something that we’re not supposed to see which is what I think is the original draw behind reality TV as well.” The other main reason is of course the relationship between Quinn and Rachel, “It is a completely psychological internal emotional relationship they are the worst to each other but they are the best to each other and that is something too that I think people are drawn to watching unfold and how far will they push each other before they bring each other back. “
How much ‘control’ does Constance get over her character development?
Fortunately, the cast is privy to an overview of the season and the different character archs. Ultimately, “It really comes down to episodes’ actor episodes when we read them they’re (creators) very open to our calling them and sit and discussing you know certain ways that emotions are dealt with.” For Constance it’s important to collaborate with the creators and showrunners, “I think it’s important we live inside these characters’ heads so for me it’s more about making sure that all the emotions and the anger are all coming from some place and their not just there loosely or shallowly but that they all kind of rooted in truth.”

The Bachelor vs Unreal
“Well our show is scripted well or at least we admit to it being scripted. Ours is obviously a lot different because we are a scripted show. We are allowed to exaggerate we are allowed to make mountains out of mole hills really our characters can be larger than life and also because we are clearly showing more about what happens behind the scenes than what happens in front of the camera obviously on those shows it’s about what’s happening front of the camera action and our show is very much about who are the people pulling the strings and what’s happening behind the scenes so our focus is more on that.”
What can we expect in season three and there’s a female suitress in the mix too?
“In season 3 there's a bit of a struggle to get back to their fighting ways but because she's evolved so far but I believe that she comes back up with a vengeance and with even more to prove because not only is she a woman who might have made a mistake or two but as we’ve learned in the business when you’re a woman and you make a mistake you have a lot more to prove than if you’re a man that makes a mistake so season 3 definitely there’s a lot of conflict once again and that alone makes the drama and especially bringing in now female suitress who are going up against Quinn and Rachel, who is creating a divide between Quinn and Rachel making Rachel doubt Quinns intentions there’s a lot of drama that is happening that Quinn herself isn’t even creating.”
The female suitress called Serena is definitely going to give Quinn and Rachel a run for their money.
“Serena comes on the scene and she wants to be here, she believes in the process she believes that she’s going to find the man of her dreams because she is going to play it all like a check board and that I thought was such a great lead in because then all Quinn and Rachel do is tear that down and that’s what they do best.” However Serena is on to them, “Serena is incredibly strong and incredibly opinionated and isn’t afraid of Quin or Rachel and is really only afraid of her own insecurities which I think to what speaks to a lot of women are afraid of, is our own insecurities and that they will get the best of us.”
People may think they know where the season is going but Constance tells us, “I think that people will always think that they know where it’s going but that’s what this show does so well is that we tend to turn it on it’s heels and turn it back into a different direction.”
Finally, how was it being part of the Marvel Universe?
“I love it , I love it so much. Being a part of anything that has to do with superheroes and the women that kickass is always a project I want to be a part of and I love being a part of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D it’s such an incredible group of people and I didn’t even know what my character was going in they are very secretive they don’t tell you anything so that was the complete opposite of what I’d just been doing on Unreal where I knew my beginning, middle and my end whereas on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D I had no idea if I was good or bad and I didn’t even know until the last episode so every day I would say to them am I good or am I bad?” “I love the idea of superheroes in general and hopefully that’s what I’ll get to play one day is a superhero hopefully with superpowers.”
