Holiday favourites for the whole family.
This joyful season, DStv is serving up a delectable feast of Christmas favourites and new festive highlights to satisfy every palate. When you decide to take a breather from gift shopping, visiting family or indulging in your Christmas lunch, be sure to enjoy some of the jolly delights DStv has on offer for kids, music-lovers, foodies and fans of series and movies.
“The festive season is the perfect time for family viewing – programming created for every member of the family to relax, put up their feet and enjoy watching,” says Aletta Alberts, General Manager for Content for MultiChoice.
“Parents might say the holidays are all about the kids - and keeping them happy and entertained is DStv’s top priority - but we’re not forgetting about the movie buffs, the foodies, the music lovers, the series and the reality fans. There’s something for everyone. Special holiday channels fliekNET (DStv channel 198) and the Animania festival on M-Net Movies Smile (DStv channel 105) are also back as a special treat for our viewers, and brand new pop-up channel M-Net Inspire (DStv channel 109) will bring the festive magic to every DStv home this season,” says Alberts.
For the kids
Disney fans can catch the movie premiere of Bob’s Broken Sleigh on Sunday, 4 December at 8:25 on Disney Channel (DStv channel 303). In this entertaining Christmas movie a young magic-less elf named Bob finds himself on a wild sleigh ride, trying to make his way back home in time for Christmas.
Disney XD (DStv channel 304) also has a brand new Disney Mickey Mouse special on Saturday, 17 December at 11:35 to enhance the celebrations. In Duck the Halls: A Very Mickey Christmas, Mickey sets out to make Donald’s first ever Christmas the greatest but the cold winter conditions have placed Donald in grave danger and could ruin the holiday for everyone!
Nickelodeon’s (DStv channel 305) gift to audiences this holiday season is the premiere of Albert For The Holidays on Sunday, 25 December at 11:10. This original animated TV movie is the heartwarming tale of a tiny Douglas fir tree that goes on a journey to become the city’s most famous Christmas tree ever.
Cbeebies (DStv channel 306) will feature the Go Jetters Christmas Special - a special festive edition of the colourful animation series - on Saturday, 24 December at 18:00; and on Cartoon Network it’s all Christmas love and holiday cheer, as the channel airs its most memorable and iconic shows on Sunday, 25 December from 11:50, including Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, The Regular Show, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls.
Just before 2016 disappears over the horizon, Disney Junior (DStv channel 309) brings the classic movie, Peter Pan to screens on Saturday, 31 December at 18:30.
Music for the whole family
“The music never stops on DStv, and this season DStv customers can have their very own un-interrupted holiday playlist with music to cater for every appetite,” continues Alberts.
Two special holiday music channels will be available on the DStv audio package until midnight on 25 December 2016. Customers can enjoy their favourite contemporary hits, adult contemporary as well as pop holiday music on DMX Holiday Favourites (channel 756); and fans of smooth Jazz, contemporary instrumental and new age renditions of well-known holiday favourites can tune into DMX Holiday Instrumentals (channel 785).
Throughout December 2016 and January 2017, M-Net (DStv channel 101) will also treat viewers to a fun-filled music series showcasing chart-topping musicians and their famous muso friends. The M-Net and Friends shows will be screened exclusively on M-Net 101 at 17:30 on the following dates: Sunday, 25 December: Swing City and Friends; and on Sunday, 1 January: Kahn and The Parlotones and Friends.
For the foodies
As usual, DStv also has a special treat for food lovers this festive season. BET (DStv channel 129) will be airing a festive episode of Africa on A Plate on Saturday, 24 December at 17:40. Chef Lentswe Bhengu introduces us to a holiday feast, including a festive turkey dish made his own special way.
In BBC Lifestyle’s (DStv channel 174) hour-long special, Simply Nigella: Christmas Special on Wednesday, 7 December at 20:00, Nigella shares her foolproof guide to stress-free festive cooking and easy entertaining - showing us how to have our most relaxed, spectacular Christmas yet.
Holiday Baking Championship on Food Network (DStv channel 175) (weeknights from Wednesday, 14 December at 19:00) sees ten aspiring bakers get ready to rumble in a flavourful fight-to-the-finish. From delicate cakes to traditional holiday biscuits – tune in to find out who will be crowned Holiday Baking Champion.
Also on Food Network from Thursday, 19 December at 12:00, it’s Christmas and Denise Van Outen leads the celebrations with some very special guests in Denise Van Outen’s Christmas!
On Saturday, 3 December at 17:30, the celebrated super chef Bertus Basson returns to VIA (DStv channel 147) for the channel’s first hour-long festive season special, Bertus se Feestafel. Bertus and his wife, Mareli, invite viewers into their home for a festive season feast that is both authentically South African and trendy.
For movie lovers
Movie fans will be thoroughly delighted with the variety of movies on offer. On Studio Universal (DStv channel 112) it’s a special “Countdown to Christmas” with double bills from 18:00 every Thursday, all the way to Christmas Day. On 1 December, catch A Bride For Christmas, followed by Fred Claus; Christmas Switch and the biblical epic, The Nativity Story on 8 December; The Perfect Holiday on 15 December, and rambunctious comedy All I Want for Christmas on the same night.
Brand new addition, M-Net Inspire (DStv channel 109), is the perfect pop-up curation for DStv Premium and Compact customers this festive season. Launching on Friday, 16 December at 06:00 and running until Sunday, 29 January at midnight, M-Net Inspire will feature movies that are motivational and celebrate the triumphs of the human spirit. The channel will also play host to The T.D. Jakes Show, a heart-warming talk show hosted by the influential and inspirational faith leader, Bishop T.D. Jakes, at noon as well as at 19:00 every day.
BET (DStv channel 129) will also screen a Christmas movie every Saturday in December kicking off with Marry Me For Christmas on 10 December, Marry Us For Christmas on 17 December, and A Baby For Christmas on 24 December.
The countdown to Christmas continues as Universal Channel (DStv channel 117) brings you a daily selection of festive films - Monday to Friday at 15:30 until Friday, 23 December, including Holiday Road Trip (1 December), Christmas Parade (5 December), and Operation Christmas (16 December).
The gloves come off in the festive comedy movie, Love The Coopers on Sunday, 25 December at 20:05 on M-Net (DStv channel 101). When a dysfunctional family come together for Christmas, everything else seems to fall apart.
Animania is back! Tune in from Monday, 5 December 2016 until Tuesday, 10 January 2017 from 06:00 until midnight, as M-Net Movies Smile (DStv channel 105) brings you a fantastic line-up of animated greats that will charm children and amuse adults alike.
kykNET has become synonymous with quality Afrikaans movies, and what better way to celebrate the festive season than with the return of the popular channel fliekNET from 1 December 2016 to 31 January 2017. The special movie channel will once again be available on DStv channel 198 this summer.
For lovers of general entertainment
On Christmas Day, Sony Max (DStv channel 128) will screen special festive episodes of Fear Factor “Christmas Fear Factor” at 20:00, a Baywatch double bill entitled Silent Night Baywatch Night Parts 1 & 2 from 21:00, and Tattoo Nightmares - Merry Inkmas at 23:00.
VUZU Amp (DStv channel 103) will screen the Braxton Family Values Christmas Special on Monday, 5 December at 19:30. If you’re a fan of this talented family, tune in for an extra special holiday-themed episode of their reality show, as the Braxton family gathers to celebrate Christmas with cooking, cocktails and singing.
Fans of British television will love ITV Choice’s (DStv channel 123) festive highlights including Paul O’Grady for the Love of Dogs at Christmas (23 December at 20:00); Surprise Surprise Xmas (24 December at 19:00); Grantchester Christmas Special (24 December at 20:00); A Merry Murdoch Christmas (25 December at 20:00); Benidorm Xmas Special (26 December at 21:00) and Paul O’Grady Favourite Fairytales on 30 December at 20:00.
Catch 12 K’s of Christmas all day from 19 to 30 December on E! Entertainment Television (DStv channel 124). The hip shaking, Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Hairspray makes a colourful live debut on the small-screen on Thursday, 22 December at 19:30 on M-Net (DStv channel 101), re-telling the tale of a fun-loving plus-sized teen in Baltimore, during a time of change in the '60s.
On Friday, 23 December 2016 at 19:30, M-Net will screen The Great Christmas Light Fight – a fun-loving series that sees four families compete to have the most elaborate and spectacular Christmas displays for a cash prize.
