Season one ended with an explosive ending, and is now followed by the crime mystery Top of the Lake: China Girl. Produced for BBC Two in association with BBC First in Australia, BBC UKTV in New Zealand, Sundance TV in the USA, ARTE in France and BBC Worldwide, Nicole Kidman plays an Australian mother whose story will intersect with Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men) who is reprising her Golden Globe winning role as Detective Robin Griffin.
Five years after the shocking events that rocked her hometown in New Zealand, Detective Robin Griffin returns to Sydney to rebuild her life. When the unidentified body of an Asian girl washes up on the beach, she is taken into the city’s criminal underbelly, and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart. Robin is haunted by disturbing dreams about the baby girl she gave up years ago, and reaches out to the family of her now teenage daughter. She now experiences the anguish of trying to help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. Overwhelmed by motherly love, Robin discovers that her stubborn daughter is romantically attached to a charismatic but dangerous older man.
