We chat to Callie from Callie-Anne Cooks into the Wild.
Callie-Anne Cooks into the Wild hit our screens last week and we’re already hooked. If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you do yourself a favour and tune into ITV Choice (123) on Thursdays at 20:05.
Zimbabwean born Callie-Anne really takes cooking to the next level by never being in the actual kitchen. Follow her on her culinary journeys – and travels – to see what she cooks up!
We caught up with Callie-Anne to chat about her show and this is what she had to say:
Why did you decide to cook in the wild?
Besides the fact that I am a little "wild" at heart, I had the greatest platform to do it. It would have been a shame not to showcase this part of our beautiful continent. Living on the Cahora Bassa Lake in the middle of the bush. I wanted to give people a taste of the delicious things I could create in the middle of nowhere!
What has been your favourite cooking experience so far?
They are all so different and equally thrilling. I think the coolest experience was when I was making pasta on set and two hippos just started fighting in the water behind me! That definitely has to be on the top of my list!
What can viewers expect from your show?
Real and simple dishes that are African inspired. I show people that, even with just fire or a wood stove, you can still make good food! A look into the life I live in Mozambique and the diverse and sometimes challenging ingredients I work with. I hope it will inspire people to get into the kitchen and feel confident.
Have you always been an outdoors person?
I was brought up in the bush as a little girl. Until I had to go to school, that was all I knew. I have always had that in me! I don't think it's something you can ever lose!
If you could be eating something right now, what would it be and why?
I would have to say Cabanossi, for no particular reason other than I am obsessed with it at the moment! This normally lasts a couple weeks until I obsess over something else. But it's been cabs for a while now!
What’s the biggest misconception about you?
That I am a prima donna. I think it's because I love fashion so much. I am the furthest thing from a diva. There is nothing wrong with little feisty vibes. But I am actually a tomboy at heart! My friends would be laughing at this question right now - they always say I have so much "ginya" (local word for force).
Do you draw inspiration from other chefs on TV? If so, who?
Yes so many! The list is very long... But I would have to say my biggest inspiration is Jamie Oliver. I love what he stands for and I love what he has created with food. I am determined to drive his food revolution and make a difference throughout Africa. He is such a vibe!
Why should everyone tune in?
Because I think it's honest and relatable. It's like no other cooking show that's ever been done before, the locations are cray-cray! It's funny, exciting, scary at times, and full of love. But most importantly, the food is great. I want to inspire peeps to hit that kitchen and not be afraid!
Complete the sentence:
I never leave home without: having a cuppa from my Nespresso machine #addicted.
My guilty pleasure is: cheese, cheese, cheese and far too much of it!
When I’m not working, you can catch me: sipping and munching.
My worst habit is: double dipping!
To see what all the fuss is about, tune in for Callie-Anne Cooks into the Wild on ITV Choice (123) - Thursdays at 20:05.
