5 Too Cool for School shows

The Barbarian And The Troll Brendar New Cropped Hed 1263695
The Barbarian And The Troll Season 1

Puppet fantasy comedy series? Yes please! Ex-princess Brendar The Barbarian and rebellious troll prince Evan become adventurous companions as they set out to complete the ultimate quest. While there’s plenty to enchant little kids, it’s the slightly older ones who’ll really catch the genre-bending absurdist jokes (including some soap opera-style romantic drama between Steve the knight and wizard Horus Scum’s ex-wife, Gnarlia), and the loopy script that makes this series such fun.

Watch The Barbarian And The Troll Season 1 from Monday, 18 July at 08:40 on Nickelodeon (DStv Channel 305)

Vikingskool Season 1

This “kool” animated series for 6-11-year-old comes from Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon (The Secret Of Kells) and French animation studio Samka Productions. It centres on three teen Viking warriors-in-training – disgraced hero’s son Erik, and artistic storyteller Arnie, and former feral child Yiva (who wants to be a Valkyrie) – and their adventures at an elite school where they’re learning everything from axe throwing, to boat racing, to troll wrestling.

Amazing Animal Friends EPG
Amazing Animal Friends Season 1

Sit your animal-mad kids of all ages down for this one, because they’re about to meet some unusual real-life animal best friends. Better still? Some of them are local, including orphaned rhino calf Esme and her best friends, David the dog and Millie the lamb. And we’ll see Zimbabwe’s famous Nzou, the elephant who thinks she’s a buffalo. Classic Disney fans will even meet real-life fox and hound best buddies. Also look out for Baby Animals Season 1, Saturdays & Sundays from Sunday, 10 July at 19:40.

Cocomelonkv WLOGO 1920X1080
Cocomelon Season 1

Singalong time! This joyful, bright-eyed and brightly coloured computer animated series with toddler and baby characters teaches classic nursery rhymes and new learn-along songs about everything from potty training to saving water, along with highlighted words. If you have a child aged one to three, this hits the sweet spot of showing things from a child’s perspective and will become a new addiction.

Big City Greens (1)
Big City Greens Season 3

Animated adventure comedy series about the Green family, who move to their grandma’s farm… a tiny green patch of land in the middle of Big City. This season begins with a Halloween episode, so the pumpkin harvest is all-important. There’s a big business lesson in store for Cricket Green (and viewers) when he gets involved in the cafe his grandmother bought at the end of season 2. And the show uncovers the terrifying power of the Live Love Laugh sign. Like Gravity Falls, this is an easy watch-along for the whole family.
