Read the hype, then find out what it’s all about by streaming these popular series for yourself.
From a period drama miniseries about a real-life killer to the latest season of Vikings and HBO’s hugely popular family drama Succession, these are the shows to add to your watchlist in the month of August.
1. HBO’s Succession
When billionnaire media mogul Logan Roy suffers a stroke, his four children are tasked with deciding what will happen to Waystar Royco, the media and entertainment corporation that Logan founded and still heads up. They’ve each got their own agenda, their own flaws, and more than their fair share of greed and ambition. Who will win?
Critics say: “There are intriguing plot twists involving leadership shake-ups, debts that must be paid, and a scandal in the cruise department that requires a hasty cover-up. But ultimately, it’s the behaviour of these blatant power-seekers - and the performances by the actors who play them - that turn Succession from a mildly interesting dramedy into a full-blown addiction.” - Vulture
Dreams and reality mix in Reverie, a new virtual reality game. But when its players get stuck there, one woman is their only hope - hostage negotiator Mara Kint.
Critics say: “The virtual reality setting is a blank canvas that invites play, and the procedural element of Mara regularly retrieving lost souls gives the series an optimistic and hopeful bent. There’s plenty of fun here, but with enough pathos to add weight.” - Indiewire
3. Dark Angel
Mary Ann Cotton would do anything to escape her life in a small mining town, even murder. Experience the dark tale of one of England's most notorious serial killers.
Critics say: “Dark Angel does a solid job of establishing the wretchedness of life for Victorian working class women” - Den of Geek
4. Alone Together
LA is a tough town, but two friends (played by stand-up comedians Benji Aflalo and Esther Povitsky) have each others' backs in this new comedy-drama about reaching for your dreams while being a perfect 6.
Critics say: “Povitsky and Aflalo are fully credible at all times - not just in their spot-on performances and comic timing, but also in how they look and move.” - San Francisco Chronicle
Available on Showmax from Wednesday, 1 August.
5. Vikings, Season 5
The Vikings saga moves from Ragnar to his sons, who are slowly conquering the known world. Meanwhile, Floki is on a quest to find Asgard, home of the gods. Showmax is the only streaming service with the latest season of this series in SA.
“Vikings is a lean, mean show that starts off well then steadily improves.” - The Guardian
