Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Season 1 on Showmax
This comedy about an ace New York lawyer who ditches her entire life on a whim in order to follow her high school sweetheart to LA is a sweet cringe-comedy that’s a hot favourite with fans and with critics. It’s best described as a musical rom-com, but heavy enough on the comedy to make it worthwhile for even the most cynical heart. Season 2, which is currently on DStv, has a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is no mean feat, and Season 1, which hit all the right notes with some very funny songs, including Sex with a Stranger, is available to stream or download on Showmax.

Suits

Seasons 1-6
on Showmax
Season 7 is on M-Net, Thursdays at 20:30.
With two of TV’s most handsome faces and slickest, smoothest-talking attorneys, Suits is a no-brainer, right out of the gates when hotshot Harvey Specter goes against his better judgment and hires a law-school dropout to work at his firm in Season 1, episode 1. The pair are almost caught out a million times between Season 1 and Season 5 … and in Season 6, it all comes crashing down for them. Before you watch Season 7, which recently launched on DStv, refill your eye-candy jar by bingeing on the first six seasons on Showmax.

Bosch

Seasons 1-2 on Showmax
Season 3 is on Universal Channel, Sundays at 20:00 and available here on DStv Catch Up.
Michael Connelly’s grizzled detective is currently hunting down a new breed of Hollywood psycho criminal as part of the LAPD on DStv, but he’s got two whole seasons of investigating the most mysterious and thrilling crimes under his belt, available to stream or download. As one of the best police shows ever made, and one of the tightest, tautest thrillers you’ll ever have the joy of watching, Bosch is one show that all mystery fans will want to trace back to the very beginning … which is possible thanks to Showmax.

Scorpion

Seasons 1-2 on Showmax
Season 3 is on M-Net, Fridays at 20:30 and available here in DStv Catch Up.
Loosely based on the life of real-life computer genius Walter O’Brien, this hacker drama is pure, simple escapism - the TV equivalent of a box of popcorn that you just can’t stop eating even though you’re not hungry and should’ve gone to bed hours ago. Walter and his fellow geeks are the last line of defence against international high-tech threats, and are tasked by larger-than-life Agent Gallo with outsmarting the world’s toughest cyber criminals. With Season 3 having recently launched on DStv, now’s the time to get up to speed with the code and the geek speak in Seasons 1 and 2 on Showmax.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Seasons 1-3
on Showmax
Season 4 is on Vuzu AMP, Thursdays at 19:30 and available here on DStv Catch Up.
Andy Samberg
, who no other young comedy star can touch as far as we’re concerned, won a Golden Globe for his role as Jake Peralta, a strikingly unambitious and bafflingly successful detective in the 99th Precinct of the LAPD. This single-camera police comedy is an unfailingly fun, laugh-a-minute ride, with clever dialogue and intriguing characters, and since Season 4 is on DStv and the show was renewed for a fifth season earlier this year, you’re going to want to start watching from the very beginning, on Showmax.

Shades of Blue

Season 1
on Showmax
Season 2 is on M-Net, Tuesdays at 20:30 and available here on DStv Catch Up.
J-Lo plays Harlee Santos, an NYPD detective (yes, another one), who has been roped into informing on her boss, Lieutenant Wozniak, to the FBI’s anti-corruption division in exchange for her own immunity. The thing is, Harlee and Wozniak go way back, all the way to the time when he helped her cover up her frame job that sent her abusive ex to jail for murder. She ends up caught between a rock and a very hard, uncomfortable place at the end of Season 1, which ends on a serious cliffhanger - but luckily, after you’ve watched the whole season on Showmax, you can start with Season 2 on DStv.

Reign

Seasons 1-3
on Showmax
Season 4 is on M-Net, Thursdays at 22:30 and available here on DStv Catch Up.
The fourth and final season of this historical drama loosely based on the life of the doomed Mary, Queen of Scots, is currently on DStv, and since there’s no more to come, consider it your royal obligation to watch - or re-watch - the first three seasons on Showmax. Despite, or maybe because of, its widely acknowledged historical inaccuracies, Reign makes the themes of medieval backstabbing, illicit affairs and underhanded plotting a load of sumptuous fun.

Blue Bloods

Seasons 1-6 on Showmax
Season 7 is on M-Net, Wednesday at 20:30 and available here on DStv Catch Up.
Welcome to the NYPD, the home of the patriotic, passionate Reagan police family. This show is family drama and crime series all rolled into one, and its on-location filming as well as its head-on tackling of issues that may be taboo on mainstream TV (such as alluding to a relationship developing between Jamie Reagan and his partner Eddie) put it a step ahead of shows in a similar vein. It’s also been renewed for Season 8 to come, making it one of the longest-running crime dramas on TV. Catch the first six seasons on Showmax.
