Toughest DStv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup expected live on SuperSport

The strong performances of countries affiliated to the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (in the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers) has the region’s football fans anticipating the toughest DStv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in ages.

The newly-branded tournament, now referred to as the DStv Senior Challenge Cup, kicks off this weekend in Ethiopia and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

“We are excited that the Ethiopian football fan’s favorite, SuperSport, is covering yet another all African tournament, by Africans, for Africa,” said Gelila G. Michael, the General Manager for MultiChoice Ethiopia.

Your World of Champions will use the tournament as a skills development platform for its Gaining Insight from Training (Gift) broadcasting programme graduates.

Five graduates from Gift Zambia will, for the first time, get to experience the thrill and intensity of producing a live football match when they join up with the multi-national crew responsible for producing the tournament.

SuperSport will also make available two commentary language options, Swahili and English, for all matches.

Eight of the 12 teams participating in this year’s edition have progressed to the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers. They’ve provided shocks aplenty in the second round, Uganda thumping continental powerhouse Togo 4-0 on aggregate, Tanzania holding out two-time World Cup finalists Algeria to a 2-2 draw and Kenya beating a Cape Verde side ranked 93 places above them.

Reigning champions Kenya face a herculean task of defending their title after being drawn in the group of death, Group B, with neighbours Uganda, Burundi and Zanzibar.

The tournament will give birth to a new rivalry with neighbours Sudan and South Sudan set to face-off for the first time ever. The two are in Group C with Malawi and Djibouti.

Hosts Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda and Somalia make up Group A.

Part of the tournament rebranding exercise includes sponsors DStv awarding all man of the matches in the knockout rounds with a special prize.

“We will be awarding all man-of-the-match performances in the knockout stages with an HD Zapper decoder,” explained Michael.
